Help! I have a machine that runs on WIN NT (with service pack 5)....
When I try to install the english version of the game that I just received in the mail, the installation gets to a point, then fails.

As the installation is about to end (100% on the bar shows up- the last item being loaded is the aviparadox.avi file)

The error message reads:

Error: String NOT_INSTALLED was not found in string table

At which point a window comes up saying

NOT_INSTALLED

I know the EU works because the german version worked fine on this machine, also, the game I got in the mail works fine on my other computer (which runs on WIN ME).... does anybody know what is going on?

I've done some InstallShield work and it sounds like something in the code is checking whether a component is installed, finding that the component is not installed, and then not finding the error message that its supposed to pop. Since its at the end of the install, I'm going to guess that it's looking to see if DirectX 7 is there and not finding it. There is no DirectX install past version 3 (or is it 5?) for NT 4.

I'm sure the Paradox guys already know this, but that's my semi-educated guess. :)

Want it to work?

Hey, if you don't care about fixing the problem (like me) then you might be happy with this workaround. I had the same problem, but when the installation reached the error message, I simply ended the task through the task manager (alt-ctrl-del, then task manager, then applications). You may have to quit a couple of tasks. Anyway, the game was completely installed before the error popped up, so everything is sitting there a-ok. The game has worked perfectly for me.

Wittgenstein,

I tried your workaround but it didn't work.

The program apperars as installed but when I try to start the game it just exits to desktop after having run the intro video. I guess that something is missing from the install.

I wrote to Patric as he suggested and he promised a solution to my problem. It will take a while though.

Thank you anyway.

No, that is another problem. The game is fully installed if you abort the installation at the error dialog.

Have you installed the 1.07c update? That fixes a problem with DirectSound. You should try the update as it sounds like a problem with your soundcard. The game starts the Sound initialization right after playing the intro videos.

Tell me that I have this right...

NOTE: I'm relatively new to PC/clone computers (I remember my crappy old Mac with fondness...sigh) so go easy on me- my questions aren't really as stupid as they sound...

So first I'll install the game as normal,

THEN when the error message comes up I: CNTL-ALT- DEL
(at which point I 'end task' several times? or do I just 'cancel'?)

THEN download the 1.07c patch

THEN play EU until I pass out from fatigue (or get caught by the boss and get fired...)

OHpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease let this be correct......

* Yes!

(at which point I 'end task' several times? or do I just 'cancel'?)

* Just end the InstallShield task.

THEN download the 1.07c patch

* Yes

THEN play EU until I pass out from fatigue (or get caught by the boss and get fired...)

* Hmmm. your call :)

I tried it... I have a suggestion

I followed the instructions provided on the FAQ page and I would suggest a slight change:

point 5 ends with ... 'click cancel'...

This did not work.
I tried it again, but this time clicked 'end task'. Then it worked.

MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE for figuring this out!

See you on the AAR board!
