What publisher and version/patch are you running? Try renaming the "Europa Universalis 2\avi" folder (stops the intro movies from running).

Bink player can be disabled be renameing the AVI folder to AVI_back.
Game should then proceed.

Hi,

I have a similar strange problem. I can start the game on XP with no problems (no need to mingle with the Bink Player here), but as soon as I have taken my choices (country and other options) and press start, the monitor goes black and Micrososft asks me if I want to send an error report or not because there seems to be an error.
This happens to me on both the old version I have (1.04) and after installing the 1.09 patch and after uninstalling and installing all again.
The whole game ran perfectly before, but I deinstalled it about two months or so ago. I would suspect that there is something wrong with the registry, but I already cleaned that, so now I am really confused (I even re-installed XP!).

Anybody with a similar problem?

Try renaming the avi folder anyway; it can cause problems even after the game has started.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

I had the same problem as kengel on my laptop; I solved it by changing the resolution of my OS to the same as in EU2, 1024x768. Still at 32 bit colordepth though, so I don´t think that was the problem.

Somehow the game cannot cope with "strange" resolutions that exist prior to starting it, although the intro movie and main menu work fine.

Actually the main menu of EU2 is always 800x600 regardless of what you set for the game resolution. But, yes, resolution changes are a frequent source of problems for some people. Probably also related to video drivers, OS version, DirectX version, video hardware, etc.
