I admit that I didn't buy the game until recently, and I hear that one of the old complaints about the game was the long transition times between screens and turns. I had a few days to play and didn't really notice it, so I thought that either it had gotten better or maybe it just wasn't a problem on my computer. Then... the latest patches came out (2.0.24759 I think, main and hotfix), and wow.
I click 'end turn' and then I find something else to do. I've been getting back into my Hugo reading, because I have time for a chapter or so of Les Miserables while I wait for the game to unfreeze. It's particularly depressing because I'm only around turn 50 or so and I figure that if it's an AI thing, it will only get worse as the alien empires grow. Seriously, I feel like I could SAVE time playing multiplayer. Started another game (and oh, how long it takes to fiddle with all the settings I want for a brand new game, and heaven forbid I forget to extend combat turn time or something or it's back to the drawing board, but that's a different fight...) and issue persists.
Admittedly, I'm playing a big map with a full 8 players, but that's because that's how I like to play space opera games. So I guess I can play a smaller game and have less fun, wait and see if the turn end times get optimized some, or go back to playing something else, like SOTS 1. Which I loved, which is why I am trying to give this one a chance.

Most turns, anything between 2-5 minutes, when I bother to time it. I have had at least one that seemed much longer but I didn't think to time it -- I honestly read a chapter of a book, looked up, and it still hadn't come out with the new turn. That's actually what annoyed me enough to start noting the time on the delay.

My turn times are long enough that I keep a book handy and I do recall one stand-out that was much longer than the others...but I'm pretty sure they're still not as slow as what you're seeing. I guess I should specifically time some though.

I expect it's just that the AIs really eat that much processing time. Kerberos wants to optimize that, I'm sure, but optimization is probably not the current priority in AI work...

From the horses mouth, hopefully this will give some hope. lol
It can not update during the player's turn as it can interrupt the player's actions (eg: cause lags switching screens because you have to wait for the AI to complete a task, could cause crashes as the AI could get interrupted when the player changes states). Its not like a human player in multiplayer as the other player has a second computer and runs independently from the host.
Just a heads up, I did find another major issue causing the turn updates to be so slow and it will be fixed in the next update (hopefully tomorrow/friday).
Was testing and had a 6 player map on turn 96, hit end turn and it took almost 2 minutes (a little slower as we have a special debug mode that maintains a lot more information to allow us to find the areas of code that causes issues). Then after the fix, the update was 30 seconds...

Thanks,

Sweet!

I'm playing with the ".4" patch. I've got an 8 player map where turns USED to take about 4 min 30 seconds. Now, they take about 1 min 10 seconds.

Uhh, I'll take it. Thanks, guys.

Very long

They are very long and it can't be a surprise to anybody. If you just start an 8 man game and hit end turn on turn one you can tell its going to suck bad. I played about 18 turns before I turned it off and waited for another patch.

Playing on the Heavens Map, with 8 players (well me and 7 AI), was getting slightly more then 2 minute turns at 130ish turns. Now I'm getting under a minute, works fine for me and I'm in the 150's. It's a turn based game after all.
