Sam Carsten's traits get repeated over, and over, and over again until he's just not interesting anymore. Believe me, I love Harry Turtledove books, but for god's sake! Yes, WE KNOW SAM HAS BAD SKIN! We know he gets sunburn easily, we know he can say things that normal people got in trouble for, and we know being a mustang isn't easy. We know all this, so quit telling it to us!

Yes Sam is an Albino, a trait that HT seems to be in love with, BUT it's been really interesting to follow him from the Battle of the 3 Naval Forces to the sinking of the Remembrance.

Yeah, Turtledove seems to do that in every book thats not a stand-alone. Its one of the only reasons i dont think hes my favorite author.

He's doing that because when you write a book in a series, there's always a slight chance that someone who hasn't read all of the books might pick up a book and read it by itself.

And I've always been a fan of Cinncinatus and Scipio and obviously, my username isn't the fictional writer. My favorite characters though are the pilot/lawyer in Canada and the seaman who died in the viciously sneaky post-WW1 attack by the Bonefish.

But, back to the main topic of the mod (no offense):

Omega - Couldn't you set it up using mod dir? That way there wouldn't need to be any serious editing of existing files? The hardest part might be making the .bat, but I think that should even be explained in one of the mod dir threads, too.

I'm surprise no-one has said 'Jake Featherston' is my favourite character... althought you got to admitt the guys been through alot.

I agree with 'Samuel Clemens' if you have't read the books before you wouldn't know Sam has bad skin, or Clarence Potter tried to kill Jake Featherston but now is his head of Intelligence for the CSA War Department. :D

Do we have photos for all the characters?

So this weekend it will be done? Do we get to play test it?

I'm so excited!! :) :) :) :)

Oh I understand completely that if something happens to a character in The Center Cannot Hold, he'll mention it in The Victorious Opposition to get new readers up to speed.

But it doesnt make sense, and its just annoying, when Sam Carsten "always burns up in the sun" in Chapter 1, and then thats repeatedly mentioned in chapter 4, 7, 9 and so on.

Well... for the US Leaders, they have pics such as Al Smith but Ive had to get a lil creative with the fictional characters- Ive used german generals to portray featherson, potter, and saul goldman.

And HT has gotten better at the Sam thing- he only reminds us now every one in 6-8 chapters.

Actually, aren't there a few leader/general pictures that come with HoI2 that aren't used in the game at all or in only a few of the specific scenarios?

Oh, and about Carsten.. I've been doing some thinking today. What if it's to show who is real life counterpart is since he hasn't done anything yet to famous or otherwise infamous to show who he is? I mean.. Turtledove can't have having names that're near anagrams of real world people to show who they are, like Morrell, now can he?

Yes some pics that I'm using...

I have 2 GREAT challenges to overcome to have the mod ready morrow: 1) getting the Panama canal FINALLY BLOCKED 2) the text screws up when talking about the event description though the buttons work fine... I'ma give a final SitRep over HoI2 on Sunday.

Final SitRep

Most trigs are done... still some problems specifically with the ones which are condition-oriented (like controlling brussels will have france DoW holland so it can push through, which works if I put 'event 2017' in the command box, f12, for the game).

Countries are done along with their tech teams... though HT doesn't talk about a free china, I put it in just to give Jap a problem to deal with but still it's got great control over Asia.

Final things to do are to get the event text working, panama canal blocked, and somehow figure out how to get those trigs like the one stated above working.

China: I recall that Sam and his officer buddies were talking about how Japan could have a free hand in China or something of that sort. So I would imagine that there would be a Free china, circa 1914.

I think that means they can bully china without fear of external pressure rather than china is free...

I gave a lot of the smaller chinese countries to japan as puppet but still want there to be a Nationlist China which has been "beefed up" by the US for japan trying to interfere in Canada... may not be book-factual but does give japan something else to worry about.

omega just had a thought about the panama canal, why not give it to colombia(they had it in the book anyway) and copying the code for the darnells(the 1 by istambul) so only columbia can pass there???

^^I had that thought the other day too! Is that hard-coded though?

no i dont think so, i wonder if the code from victoria would work though???

Just found this...

Hey, I just stumbled across this forum last night, because it had occured to me as well that Hearts of Iron 2 would be a great platform for a mod for Turtledove's Settling Accounts series. I was ecstatic to see that other players had thought the same thing... I've read and loved the entire series so far, and am an avid HoI2 player, so I'd be happy to help in any way possible to this project -- even though as I understand it (having read all of the posts thus far) the project is to be completed the day after tomorrow... However, I did have some questions as to how the story was handled so far in the mod;

1. Is Canada (with the exception of Quebec) directly under US control?
2. Who replaces Kaiser Wilhem II when he dies in 1941?
3. What portraits are being used to represent Confederate barrels and fighters (namely, the fearsome Mule) and US fighters that did not exist in our history?
4. Will there be a non-Freedom Party Confederacy (represented by the blue-on-red flag) that can be created if the US player annexes and then releases the Freedom Party CSA?
5. I do not recall reading that the US flag has an eagle in place of the stars -- I recall hearing references to the stars-and-stripes and a mention somewhere that the CSA's states were still represented as stars well after the War of Secession. I do recall hearing, though, that the US military insignia for aircraft is an eagle with crossed sabers in its talons.
6. Italian history ought to be very similar in this world as it is to ours; unless its otherwise stated by Turtledove, Benito Mussolini should still be around, as Italy wasn't as severely punished as Germany and Austria at the end of World War I in our history, and definately would not be in Turtledove's... this point is really open to debate, however.
7. Is Irving Morrel going to be an assignable US military commander?

I realize its somewhat awkard to waltz in here with these points, but I hope someone can help me out with these questions, I would very much appreciate it. And as far as help goes, I can quickly whip up a unique Featherston portrait that would fit in well with the feel of the game, as well as an Al Smith portrait for the states... in addition to the Freedom Party flag, CS flag, Freedom party battle flag (includes gold eagle and word "freedom") in addition to a 35-star US flag and eagle w/ crossed-sabers US flag.

Glad to know you guys have worked hard on this.

6) As far as I know it was stated in the latest book, Settling Accounts, that Mussolini was not in power. There was some off hand remark by a character who said something to the effect of "some strong-arm Italian guy pledged to make the trains run on time if he was elected. Too bad he never got into power." I could be wrong but that's what I got out of it.
