Unlike my other recent AAR's this isn't so much a tutorial as a guide to explore some of the options available to Canada. They are not as complex as say the Majors but often players have a hard time figuring out what they can do. I hope this AAR offers you some options which you can adapt to your own personal play style. Enjoy and have fun! ;)

OPENING

Canada is a unique nation. They have a small population, small economy but have great potential. You are well protected under the umbrella of the USA. Once war starts the US, UK and France will all provide you with lend lease making your Industry boom. Your limiting factor ultimately will be your low Manpower. I like to play Canada historically, aligning to the Allies and serving in a support role. To this extent I will focus on a navy first, then specialized units and finally aircraft when I begin to lend lease (save the big ticket items for when you have tons of IC to play with).

LETS BEGIN!

The first thing I do is delete all my units. One INFx3, a DD and 6 TPs. I won't need them. I will be Product licensing almost all of my units from the UK (supporting the home country!) and I wont be using TPs but rather LCs.

You will notice the Heavy Cruiser Tech in the above queue, that is because the CA will be my Capital ship. It shares practicals with CL's so they make a nice combo for a minor nation.

PRODUCTION & TRADE

I start off with 10 convoys in production until I can get my bearings. I wont worry about buying much resources until such time as I fire War Economy and see what I need to keep afloat. I start off with trades to the USA & Soviet Union selling 10 supplies to each. This will bring me in some cash to fire laws and buy PL's. When I can, If I can I will reduce those trades and try and keep as much IC as possible into actual units.

I purchase my first PL's;

I place one at the top of the production queue. Soon I'm able to fire better laws;

After firing Basic Mobilization I put the 2nd CL up at the top of the queue as well. Soon its time for my next PL's;

The DD's were put right behind the CL's in production. I fired One year draft in May followed by unlocking Heavy Cruisers. I put a single CA at the top of the queue and the 4 Heavy Cruiser Techs in my Research queue.

THE PLAN

I plan on building several small taskforces (SS x 2 & CL x 1 / DD x 2) as well as small surface fleets (CA x 2 / CL x 4). I'll build LC's for landings and my troops will consist of MTN x 4, MAR x 4 and later on PARA. Aircraft must wait until Lend lease comes as its too expensive for my Economy.

ROLLING ALONG

The end of May I fired Full Mobilization and then finally;

In June I begin to stop some of the trades for supplies, saving the IC for production. And then my next PL purchase;

I bring them up in the middle of the production queue;

1939

A single DD and CL complete. I then purchase PL's for 2 more Subs. My first CA completes along with additional vessels;

I immediately put another CA at the top of the queue. In June 2 subs complete. I order 4 more CL's. A few more ships complete as the year rolls on, then I shift gears;

December 27th my 2nd CA completes.

1938

January 1st I put Radar at the top of my queue (one year early). 2 Subs complete in January and 3 CL's in April with another coming off production in June. I put 2 more CA's at the top of the queue;

HoI3_72_zpsfxjlhdax.png

In July my Mtn brigades begin to complete. In August I order 6 LC's.

1939

In January I order 20 Marine brigades.

In February I was able to queue up Radar for my main port;

In March my first LC completes as well as the 2 CA's. I order 4 more CL's and put 2 at the top of the queue.

HOW THINGS STAND

I mobilized August 1st, 1939. Some of my Marines completed. In a short time my forces once complete will consist of ;

5 Mtn x 4 Divisions
5 Mar x 4 Divisions

2 Taskforces of SS x 2
2 Taskforces of CL x 1 / DD x 2
2 Small Fleets of CA x 2 / CL x 4

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Once war starts the UK & France and shortly thereafter the USA will all agree to provide you with Lend lease. That will bring your effective IC up to 100 or so more then enough to start cranking out some big ticket items (like aircraft). Your limiting factor will be your low Manpower.

WHAT TO DO?

I personally like to use this set up to support the Allies in all ways. Convoy raiding, Sub hunting, Isle captures, invasions of Norway & Tunisia as well as Italian held Isles. As the war progresses you can venture into the Pacific as well. The sky is the limit to the options available as Canada.

Here is the August 25th, 1939 saved game file;

CONCLUSION

I'll say again this wasn't so much as a Tutorial as it was an explanation of some options (many players never consider building with mostly PL's) available to you. I hope you find it interesting and helpful. Enjoy and have fun! ;)

Good tutorial. So UK and USA actually agree on PLs? I usually had hard time convincing them, maybe I asked for too much.
So you do not research tech for these items, only industry and doctrines?

Once your in an alliance they should have no problem selling you PL's. I think the UK turned me down once, but you just spam it again ASAP. What I usually do is gradually research the techs that will benefit the PL's I purchase so at some point if I surpass their techs/doctrines they will upgrade. Lets say if you buy INF brigades and they come with the Mountain warfare bonus, but not the Jungle. If i can I will gradually research the infantry techs until i can unlock the Jungle tech and after its researched my units will upgrade.

Focusing on naval and air is efficient use of manpower and historical, whether heading east or west.

I understand why marines - why the mountain units? Specific mountainous objectives?
Also, do you use any support brigades you can attach in the field?

Canada is nicely protected - interesting how Australia is wide open to the Japanese, and South Africa in between.

I sometimes like to try and retake Norway when I play Canada. I usually try for stuff like that. My units are usually complete when they ship out, I dont usually attach anything later on.
