OK, here's a real Newbie question. And no, I haven't read all of the manual yet, just the first 20 pages or so. I want to try this game out before readign all of the manual - I'll get through it eventually.

One of the first things you are asked to do in the tutorial is to clear out the natives of a province you have just discovered. I can't find any way to do that, and leaving my army in the province doesn't seem to make a difference. What's the deal?

The manual (I have a Danish version) claims to have a tutorial description, or at least that it's available on the CD. I can't find it anywhere. What's the deal with this one too?

Select the Army in the region you want to clear of Natives. In the box that appears in the Left hand side of the screen towards the botton of the box you will see "attach Natives" just above the normal "split/re-org" selections.

Just click on this and you will start the fight.

I would definatly check out the link for beginners FAQ's it's far better than the manual.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but there is no "attack natives" button in that place or anywhere. Perhaps there aren't any natives in that province? Not likely, as this is a tutorial. In any case, the tutorial doesn't seem to advance.

I have the first FAQ mentioned in that thread. It does not mention this problem AFAIK.

Sorry didn't answer your other question.

I have never seen a copy of the Tutorial description - sorry I have the NA version. I would suggest getting into the game ASAP with a GC - very good leaning curve if you read the link above and ask on this site if you need help.

It's a great game - enjoy!!.

I had the impression from other people that this game has a steep learning curve, but I did expect the tutorial to behave nicely.

I shall take your advice to heart and start something else - perhaps a smaller scenario to start with.

To check if there a Natives in the province you can click on the province, if natives are shown in the box on the Left hand side you should have them there if there are none shown the province is empty of natives.

In the main view each province with natives usually is shown by little huts.

Not all the provinces in the tutorial have natives. You are starting out in Ulster if I recall and the province immediately Southwest does not have any natives. If I remember correctly, the SOuthernmost province in Ireland does and one of the provinces on the east coast as well. On the other hand, you may have already cleaned out the natives if you moved a large army into the province to begin with.

That is for the most part correct. The two provinces next to Ulster do NOT have natives in them. There are natives in the bottom 2 provinces of Ireland. Also, you need to make sure you don't kill off all your natives before you get that "mission." Otherwise, I don't think it registers until you kill off other natives...

Also, be careful of doing things in the right order for the tutorial... Otherwise, you might finish some missions that you didn't know about before you're assigned them giving you very little chance to complete other missions... Where I ran into trouble was when I had to find the Mamelukes, I instead built up all over the place. And then when I finally found the Mamelukes, I had to build a province in Spain, build 25000 troops there, then take a province from the Mamelukes... By the time I was ready to attack the Mamelukes, I had taken a peace with them (I guess because I hadn't done anything to them in that timespan)... I couldn't complete my mission of taking a province from the Mamelukes and getting a good peace treaty... I stopped playing the tutorial after that...

Good luck,
Frank

Thanks, that's helpful. The turorial could have been clearer on this point. I distinctly got the imporession that I was supposed to move an army into an adjacent perovince and clear out the natives there.

Actually, the "tutorial description" is a part of the manual called "Learning scenario" (page 8 in my UK version) but it's more a description of the game functions, in the oder you'll need them in the tutorial than a description of the tutorial itself.

Anyway, the tutorial is sooooooo boring (though IMO useful to learn the basis of the game...but I don't think it's necessary to finish it).

Right, that part of the manual is only available in the pdf file - on the CD. Thanks.

Upon replaying the tutorial, I can see that given enough patience (yes, it is boring) it can be understood correctly.

I started on the IGC as Denmark instead - an interesting experience. Denmark has very little military potential, having Norway as a colony and Sweden as a vassal (so no point in expanding that way). It also has little money and lacks the technology for seagoing exploration, so I really didn't know where to start. Have to figure out how to make money. Probably better to start with a more obvious country.

To make some money, you must invest in trade and infrastructure, and possibly turn protestant as soon as you'll have the chance.

Can't help you with Denmark. I never tried it.

I would tend to advise a beginner to play one of the major countries, since it's easier. However, beginning with a minor is probably less overwhelming. If you think you can get by, it will certainly be much more challenging this way.
