The tutorial scenario seems to crash at a specific point when played under similar circumstances.
System configuration: Windows 98 running on a Dell Pentium 500MHhz with 128MB of main memory and 16MB of video. Available disk space > 10GB. Crash occurred twice, in one instance cable modem connection to Internet was active, in other only Europa Universalis was running.
EU 1.08 was installed.
Scenario was played three times.
In the first, Eire did not do well - failed to annex Catalonia and fought a losing war with the Mameluks.
In the second and third, Eire did better - annexed Catalonia and owned all of modern Ireland / UK / France / Spain / Portugal / Italy before encountering the Mameluks around 1700.
After encountering the Mameluks the game in rapid succession posted messages to:
- turn a colony in Spain into a city; move 25,000 troops to Gerona, and prepare for war.
There was time to issue instructions to meet the above (with the game paused) then ….
Europa Universalis disappeared and the system returned to the main Windows 98 screen.
No Windows or game error messages appeared.
The third time through (second crash), there are auto save files every three years. One can be sent if desired.
Second and third games came from the same starting point but diverged around 1650 -- long before the crash.
In a related note, there is a clear element of scenario design weakness. In the second game, there was a requirement (for Victory points) that Eire raise at least one colony in Spain to the status of a city - when the condition was raised all colonies in Spain were already cities. The third game was played carefully leaving some non-cities in Spain to allow for the chance that the game logic died on this point. (Although all provinces in Spain belong to Eire.)
Hope this helps - the game seems very interesting but clearly still has some unfinished edges.
