I've been playing local co-op with my brother, using a standard Xbox 360 USB gamepad, and there is not a single button on the controller that will cast a standard forward-facing spell, like pressing the right mouse button with a mouse/keyboard would do. It works fine other than that, but for some reason there's not a button that does the most basic kind of casting. However, specialty casts (like self-cast and area cast) are bound to the triggers and bumpers and are as follows:
  • The right bumper performs a self-cast
  • The right trigger performs a melee attack / binds a spell to your sword
  • The left trigger is an area cast
  • The left bumper switches element sets
All of this was discovered by trial and error, of course, because the game doesn't allow you to format your controller and doesn't even show you what the keybindings are.

Use the right thumb stick to aim and control which way you are using your spells :)
