After waiting for several months, this morning I am finally able to put my hands on EU Italian version... rush home, install the game and... nothing! I get to the menu screen but I'm unable to get through the sound initialization, the system sometimes freezes, sometimes give me a system error. I phoned the Italian distributor hotline, they advised me to update the sound card drivers... I did it with no result whatsoever. I have turned off from the ctrl-alt-del menu all other apps (only Explorer and Systray on), still nothing. I have read in other threads that is possible to run the game with "no music" but in my "Start" menu I have no such icon! I looked for a patch but on the menu screen I have read 1.09b... I am sincerely clueless, please someone give a helping hand to this very depressed strategy enthusiast.

I run ME on the system below:
PIII 733
128 MB
M/B Intel D815EEA with integrated SB PCI128
Creative GeForce2 MX 32
HD IBM 30GB
Sony 17" monitor

P.S. The game runs (very slowly) on my old P200MMX, so the CD is OK.

There should indeed be an option from the "Start" Menu. Maybe they changed it for your version.
You should be able to do it from the command line. Consult the readme file for instructions. I dont know whether the command is "nomusic" or not.
You could try using "nomusic"

In case you want to do this, here is how.

Create a shortcut on your windows desktop.
right click on it and select proporties.
The 'target' field should look something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Europa Universalis\Europa.exe"

Change it to look like this..

"C:\Program Files\Europa Universalis\Europa.exe" nomusic

Please note that there is a space between the last " and the n of nomusic.

I am so glad.

Now take the time to go to the FAQ Forum and read some of the "Sticky" posts and follow some of the links there. It will take a time but your understanding of the game will be better.

Any questions then please post in the proper Forum. In the main this is a very friendly and helpful Board - full of people just waiting to help.

Enjoy........ and.......
