Hi there,
I, like a lot of other people it would seem, cannot get Hearts of Iron II to work on my PC which has vista. I have spent about 2 hours now installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, and fiddling with the registry and all the other associated bits and bobs that this forum has suggested to get it to install and it still won't work. Can anybody please give me a hand with this?
I have the Hearts of Iron II Anthology, am using windows vista, and i've been installing it (as per recommendations) in C://Games (a folder i created) rather than the standard program files. I can install it fine, thats no problem whatsoever, but when i come to play it? I can get as far as selecting a scenario, and then selecting a country, but when i press "Start Game" the thing closes down saying something along the lines of "HOI2 has encountered a problem and will now shut down" (the standard Vista/windows line about it). I've closed down every single program i can find running at the time, and yet the same problem occurs everytime. So far i have only installed the original game with no expansions as i knew there could be problems.
But yes, help please!
Regards,
Jim
p.s. i have turned off UAC as well.

Yes, I have tried running as the Admin. I have uninstalled the program and then reinsalled it in compatiblity mode and as the admin - this also does not work.

As far as I know the only thing I have not tried is installing Virtual PC installing XP and then installing Hearts of Iron in XP.

Update:

I am able to install and run Hearts of Iron and Hearts of Iron II without issues (so far) but Doomsday and Armagedon both crash just like before. I guess, unless I find a solution I will either have to play HoI without the add ons of DD and A or wait until III comes out.

Bypass the start menu altogether.

Use Windows explorer to navigate to the folder of the game you want to install and run SETUP.EXE from the disc.

Also don't install into the default PROGRAM FILES location - use a custom path such as games\doomsday or games\armageddon
