Unable to install patch 2.1b

Hey there. I bought Crusader Kings and the Deus Vult expansion on Friday via GamersGate. I was happily playing them until yesterday whereupon I was hit by constant fatal errors. Checking online I was happy to see that there is a beta patch available for DV which I had not installed. Having attempted to now install the beta patch, I am having no luck whatsoever. I DL the patch from - http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331766 - extract it to desktop and attempt to install. Each and every time I do attempt to install the patch I get the following message;

'--- excel file not found
---
Do you want to continue?'

I am supplied with three options from this message, 'Abort, Retry or Ignore'. If I then click 'Retry' I just get the generic Window's error report option. If click 'Abort' I get;

'Runtime Error!

Program: ...CUME~1\SHAUNF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX94.969\Crusaders.exe

abnormal programe termination'

'Ignore' supplies;

'*** Unhandled Exception Detected!
Address: 0x7C901010

Please report (more information in log file)'

I have utterly uninstalled and then re-installed everything three times before attempting once more to install the patch. I am met with the same result. I am thus in a quandry as to what to do. I fully confess to only having a basic understanding of computing, and I hope I have thus supplied enough details for a solution to be given. Apologies if I am doing something really stupid. Any help would be very welcome.

Edit: If this is of any use, my operating spec: Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+, 2.21 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM, Radeon X1800 GTO

Put the 2.1 betapatch file (the .rar-file) in your main Crusader kings folder

C:/program files/paradox entertainment/crusader kings

Then right-click on the .rar file and select the option, 'extract here'

I followed the above directions, but hit a snag.

I have no option on my patch that says "extract here". Is it still possible for me to use this patch? My game has been crashing a great deal.

Hmm, looks more like something from your computer, for example, if you're not using an admin account on it.

Though I could be wrong

Looks like an error with Vista, which doesn't with standard settings give full rights to all folders. There should be many threads on the issue made earlier in this forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\, right click on the crusader kings folder. Select properties and remove write protected mode. ( or something like that)

just a general note; in VISTA its better to install your games not in program files because it doesnt allow progs. to write to this directory and generally causes problems with read-write access etc blah blah and it puts your save games in a virtual drive somewhere off in space which is really hard to find so uh i just put my games in C:\Games and problem is solved
