In the Lets play videos Ive seen I see underground metals icons on the map. Ive started about 10 games to date and the only metals I see are the ones above ground, never have I seen a metal icon like in the videos. As something changed in the past week or am I just missing something?

There are certain sponsors that start with those technologies, so perhaps that's why you never saw it being researched.

Also note there's a much earlier tech allowing you to deep scan with probes. You still can't get to the resources, but at least it helps in planning.

There are 3 sources of natural Metal:
1. Metals Deposit: scattered on surface, can come from asteroids, collectible by drones and Transport Rover, you need regular scanning to reveal them
2. Underground Metals: for which you need the manned Metal Extractor, regular scans reveal them
3. Deep Metals: you need "Deep Scanning" tech to reveal them, and Deep Metal Extraction tech to be able to mine (both under Physics)

1st one has no icon, and the other two share the same red metal icon. The background for Deep Metals is orange until you reserach Deep Metal Extraction.

The background for Deep Metals is orange until you reserach Deep Metal Extraction.

Which makes it irritating since Deep Metals/Water are usually better than Underground Metals/Water. Leaving it as orange or using another color to differentiate between Deep Metals and Underground Metals would be better.
