In the original HoI2/DD/Arma, new units got their names, when their build was finished. The game checked all units in the whole game including the build queue, the deployment pool and the map, and then chose the first name out of unitnames.csv not found in either of those places. This way, there was no double naming of units possible. This was good practice and always made sense. Unfortunately somebody decided to abandon it.

Now, units get their names, when the build is started. The build queue still seems to be checked, but the deployment pool is not. Meaning, if I don't deploy a unit right after it is finished (i. e. leave it in the pool for a while for whatever reason), another unit with the same name is started. This way, I already had several units with the same name, which is especially irritating and annoying, when they later get into the same corps. Since you don't see, which units are currently built, even renaming units is out of question, as it's bound to lead to yet more units sharing the same name.

I don't know for what reason the principle, that units get their names only when they're ready, was abandoned. I want it back. This is a major issue to me, I like historical builds and divisions with the right names (and the absence of duplicates!) are part of it. This issue, and the fact that the AI scripts are completely out of whack (since they can't cope with the changed combat rules) is currently the reason, why I temporarily went back to Armageddon. I still consider AoD a game with potential and really would like to return someday.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, since it seems to be working as designed, however if this is the case, I regret to say, that IMO it's designed poorly.

The problem with AOD is that compared to reality in aod a single divison holds far less importance and adding in the historical names for units is really just something extra for example a random infantry unit may be given the name Gross Deutchland or Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler but that unit still has no more significance then 100 other infantry divisions.

Perhaps ask in the modding section if it be possible to have a historical names mod as I doubt its a bug that this is happening.

Or just deploy your units before starting a new line of production.

So judging by your apologetic comment it's fine to you to have the game produce units with identical names?

I have my own historical naming mod, thank you very much. All I ask for is that the game doesn't give a unit a name that another unit already has. I. e. as HoI2 behaved up to Armageddon, before somebody of the AoD devs introduced this bug. Is this too much to ask?
