Do the unit statistics given apply to a single soldier, or the entire group?

The reason I ask is...I have a choice between Axeman and Springborn. Springborn have similar cost and better stats all around. However, a squad of them has only half the numbers that a similar squad of Axeman have.

There are similar conundrums with other unit types. Do I need to consider the size of the unit when evaluating its effectiveness?

Why are the 'main stats' sometimes inconsistent with the 'substats'?

For example, Brigands have an archery rating of 10, compared to 11 for master longbowmen. However, all their substats are the same, except damage...and Brigands do MORE damage than master longbows!

That's something I had noticed too. No idea
On a similar subject, some spells raise the "defense" of units : it is unclear which of the sub values is impacted.
