Ive started noticing that armored units will face their front armor towards threats (as they should), but even do so when they dont actually know the threat is there.
Example, I snuck up a Panzershreck team for a side hit on a Croc. They were not detected, but as soon as they were in range, the croc auto faced directly at them.
This happens at range as well, with tanks facing their front armor to at guns that are in range, but have not fired/revealed themselves.
And I can assure you, its not that they were detected, and the croc, for example, was on hold fire. As in my croc example a seperate team that accidentally WAS revealed was immediately engaged by said tank.
If i moved the panzershreck team back to the other side of the hedgerow, the tank would then return it facing towards an additional at gun I had that was also hidden and on hold fire.
