I have had this problem for a long time. I attack, the battle starts and then immediatly my units stop fighting and the battle ends. This seems to happen more often with MC units, but is in no way limited to them. Any help?

Try slowing the game speed down in order to follow the battle in the battle sidebar window. Perhaps that will give you more information about why the combat is ending early. This shows all sorts of things like leadership, stacking penalties, weather, supply, etc.

Military controlled Armies still follow the AI's tolerance level to losses. Also if i remember correctly the AI does not calculate their masters (the controlling human player) forces when determining when to break off its attack... So they tend to break off early.

As for why your own forces tend to break off fast... well that depends on many factors and RedJackets suggestion is my recommendation as well.
