My and other people's (mainly mine though) questions about units were cluttering other threads, so I created this thread just for unit questions. Don't worry JanH, I won't pile on every single question I have! :D In fact I only have one: After reading those articles on the Russian Navy, I have to ask why the entire Udaloy class won't be included. It looks like they will absolutely be in service in 2030. Also, there is not much difference between the one and two, so I thought it would be very easy and cheap to include the entire class. I do not think this would be redundant, as there is only one Udaloy II. Here is a quote from one of the articles supporting what I have said:
The Udaloy-class ships have been much more successful and have over the last decade served as the mainstay of the Russian fleet for various missions ranging from recent anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden to various exercises with other navies around the world. Eight of these ships are currently in service in the Northern and Pacific Fleets, with one more in reserve. They were built primarily in the 1980s, though the Admiral Chabanenko is an improved version that was commissioned in 1999. These ships will remain in service well into the 2020s, if not beyond.

As I'm a software developer myself I can assume that time and resources may be the main constraints. I would also assume that the databases containing unit information could be edited, enabling you to include this specific type yourself. :p

The difference between the two Udaloys is actually quite big, because the Udaloy I has no surface-to-surface missiles so it can only fire at enemy surface ships with its guns. This is because of a decision made in the seventies that a multipurpose destroyer would be too expensive so they decided to build one ASW destroyer and one ASuW (the Sovremenny). The Udaloy II however has 8 SS-N-22 missiles which is quite decent for a multipurpose destroyer. Actually the russian designation for the Udaloy I is "large ASW-ship" not destroyer but even Putin uses the word "destroyer".

I guess the devs dont have the time to do both of them, but perhaps in this fictional future they are making the Ruskies decide to modernize their Udaloys to Udaloy II standard :).

JanH: The only real physical differences are the appearance of the main missile launchers, and the absence of one of the forward 5 inch guns in the Udaloy II.

CarlosM: There's a thought!

Just did some more digging, and found out that all but the Udaloy II will be decommissioned during the 2020s.
Well, that was what I originally found out during early research (thus them not being included in the unit list), but later I heard the opposite, and now I am just confused. The Russians and their fans are announcing new stuff every week about their new super navy, so we'll probably just make something up for the game :D

I think you should include the Udaloy I in the game, because many sources say it will be in service beyond the 2020s. I suggest you use the Udaloy II model in the initial release, then put the Udaloy I model up for download in a later units/models expansion pack.

You are quite insistent :p

Considering that the Udaloys is actually one of the few russian ships in working order its quite possible that it will remain in service beyond 2020. It probably depends on how fast they can get a new destroyer class to replace them though. The Kuznetsov usually have an escort of 2 Udaloys whenever it goes abroad so they seem to be pretty reliable.

Well, I believe that Nimitz suffers from "Too valuable to lose, too valuable to use" syndrome. Global powers are seeking to build their armies on smaller stealthier and faster machines of war and naval forces are not an exception.

Really?

Lets see,
1) UK 65,000 tons up from 20,000-25,000 tons on carriers, Destroyers up to 8,000 tons. Frigates up in tonnage
2) Frances possible future carrier, up to 65,000 tons from around 40,000 at current I believe? Destroyers are also larger than current.
3) America has never got ships that are smaller. The planned future cruiser is large, the new carriers will be larger, the new amphibious assault carriers will be larger... America rarely goes smaller it seems :p
4) India, destroyers are larger, Carriers are larger.
5) China planning to invest in carriers.
6) Russia expanding carriers.
7) Italy's new amphibious carrier is larger and more powerful. Her destroyers are larger.

As a rule every SSN has got larger and larger. Every SSBN has got larger.

As for faster machines of war... The Daring was only required to have 28 knots as oppossed to the previous escorts having 30 knots. The QE class will only require 26-28 knots. One version of the LCS can indeed do an impressive speed but the cost and other sacrifices made to achieve this result in a somewhat weaker vessel IMHO. Furthermore when a missile is doing 500+ knots the difference between 28, 30 or 40 knots means very little.

Stealth yes, Longer range yes. Smaller... no. As a general rule a ship benefits from a larger hull than a smaller one due to stealth being able to make it appear small and the increased sea keeping, hull resilience, weapons space and stabalisation in the water that allows for a higher radar mast and thus increased coverage and a further radar horizon from the ship.

I don't know where you got the smaller machines of war from but it's not a majority rule observed by other nations around the world. You could argue that more nations are using Corvettes more and more but then I would argue that they have replaced the small missile boats, patrol boats and torpedo boats that the USSR for example used widely. I would also argue that a Corvette against a large destroyer will lose.... for that matter 4, 5, 6+ corvettes will lose because in the end the destroyer will have better sensors, higher up on the platform. It will be able to operate and fight in rougher seas and in deeper water. Should the corvettes seek to use the coast the blue water surface vessel can remain off coast and utilise a wide range of long range and capable options.

UCAVs are only widening this gap due to the ability of an 8,000 tonne vessel to have a forward mission bay and then be supported by a larger number of survelience and multi purpose areial platforms than is possible with the likes of manned aircraft.

We'll probably include the names of those not scheduled to be decommissioned before 2030. Sorry, Nimitz :)

We don't have different models for each ship, so it's essentially just a unit name in the database. You could mod it an include one named after yourself if you wish :)
