Not really. The Harpoon is subsonic, sure, but it's a very mature technology, a damn capable missile that can be fired from a lot of platforms, including the trunk of your car (not really, but it would be fun).

Subsonic only feels bad because you have to be careful about how you launch it. You can't do the whole "Light up all your sensors and fire off everything" that is available to a supersonic/hypersonic missile. That said, while it can be nerve wracking using a subsonic sea skimmer due to how stealthy they are it can be amusing when a swarm suddenly pops up 20 miles from you and thus only seconds from overwhelming your missile defences.

How many harpoons do vessels typically carry?

Typically smaller corvette/fast missile boats carry between 4-8
Typcially small frigates to large destroyers carry 8 Harpoon
Larger vessels or specialised vessels have been known to carry more Harpoon or the similar TASM (Iowa class BB, Aegis class Destroyers/Cruisers)

The harpoon is very capable but compared to other countries that have many options for anti ship missiles the us limited to only one currently.

Hellfire is Anti-ship capable
Standard Missiles can engage Ships
Harpoon is a dedicated Anti-Ship missile
Tomahawk Block IV has Anti-ship capability
TASM was a Anti-Ship cruise missile that has apparently been removed from service but will have likely been stored.

A number of missiles are in development. Some stealthy sea skimmers, others long range supersonic cruise missiles.

Yeah but the us is currently outgunned by china... untill those missiles in development come into service.

How so? 11 CVN's, more or less as many amphibious assault carriers. So many more modern SSN's its not funny. SSGN's in the form of converted Ohios.

Economically China is more stable. Politically and diplomatically shes about equal. Militarily she loses because she has to combat America's Navy which she cannot do.

All these supossed 'modern' Anti-ship cruise missiles are not in full production and many of them are as vulnerable or more vulnerable than a carrier. Standard missile can engage all of them including balistic missiles by the time those missiles could be used.

thank you for calming my nerves.

Well that's not to say China couldn't win, or do something unexpected. It is just to say that all this talk about carriers being "pointless" or "no longer useful" has been proven wrong again and again since people started saying that almost right after the war. Given the prolification of some attempt to find a weapon to combat them it makes sense that this would only happen if the carrier is in fact a dangerous and versatile tool.

Furthermore, even if the USA only had Harpoon due to being able to be aircraft launched with a decent radius and good stealth they have less to worry about than some might suppose. Considering a carrier has upwards of 50 strike aircraft that's an awful lot of firepower if need be!

Its a really good flight simulator that works every single feature of the f/a-18e made by the same people that made fleet command. My favorite thing about that game is you can attack a Russian carrier in many different locations from Floyds to open blue water... The only thing the game lack is the new apg-79 aesha for the hornet.

It does sound like a good simulator, I may try it. Though in truth I usually prefer RTS or strategy simulations due to the more complex tactical and strategic overview. Yeah the F18 is a fantastic fighter :).

le bourget, france, june 20 (reuters) - the french navy could join the united states and britain in using ship-based cruise missiles by 2015 after delivery of its first batch from european missile maker mbda, a company executive said on monday.

* * *
speaking on the sidelines of the paris air show, lionel mazenq, a systems engineer for mbda involved in the development of the scalp naval cruise missile, said the aim was for it to be used first on multi-purpose frigates.

* * *
the scalp naval is being built in two configurations.

The vertical launch will be used on frigates holding as many as 16 missiles, of which aquitaine is due to be commissioned in 2012.

The second is the sub-surface missile to be used on the nuclear-powered barracuda class attack submarine which is due to be commissioned by 2016.

The scalp, derived from the equivalent version operating on the rafale fighter jet, will have a range of about 1,000 km.
