Reinstall, most likely not all the files are installed correctly.
If you are installing a patch, it asks you to overwrite certain files, answer 'yes' to that.
If you install fresh from the CD with no patches installed, does it work then?

The publisher is Atari and the version of the game is 1.04a.

I would tend to think this may be a language issue, are you trying to play the game outside of North America? Or is your system setup as with any non English language settings?

I tried a method suggested by a poster last year there: (change language to US american then turn back to canadian french).
