I've been trying to play for about 2 hours today but the game has crashed about 7 times, 4 of those on startup or as the game loads. I dont use any mods at all. I've disabled every overlay I can, I've reinstalled the game 3 times, I've restarted my computer more. The game is currently unplayable for me, and I don't have any mods. What can I do to fix this, please?

Has the game ever worked for you on this machine, or never yet?

Do HOI4 and CK2 work for you on it?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log .

this is in fact my first time running single player stellaris on this new machine; however I had just played a few hours of multiplayer the day before and had no problems. I can attempt HOI4 if you think that would help.

Attached are all the files requested; however I must note that the error log only reports the most recent, 12th crash. The other 11 reports from the crashes folder have different error messages, most but not all of which are similar to "[13:59:30][gfx_dx11.cpp:935]: Finish command list failed with HR '-2005270523'"

Thank you for your time helping me with this. I love this game and very much want to play it

[16:08:34][empire_design.cpp:840]: Failed to migrate government type [gov_despotic_empire] to authority for empire design. Mods?
You are sure there are no mods in use? What version and checksum do you see in the main game menu (NOT in the launcher)?

From that dxdiag we might try a clean reinstall of nVidia:

- uninstall their drver and all other nVidia software
- reboot
- install May 2022 https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
- reboot again

Then test with a new galaxy. Any better?

here's a snippet of the version number from the main menu, idk how to find the checksum.

wanna note that taking that snippet crashed the game.

here's another snippet to show I've got 0 mods. I last played stellaris a year ago on another computer (built a new one recently) and while I had a few minor mods on the steam workshop from then, I never wanted to turn them on for this machine, using a no mods play set and "unsubscribed from all" on the workshop shortly after the first crash.

I reinstalled my drivers and created a new galaxy but the game crashed again after roughly 40 min of play. I'll attach the crash log.

That's not the game's main menu, that's the launcher - a completely separate app. Click HOME there then PLAY, to start the game itself.

that was in fact from the main menu. the first snippet was from the main menu and crashed the game. the second one was from the launcher. here's another of the version number, bigger so you can see the menu buttons. this also crashed the game.

That version and checksum are fine, so we don't really have any clues what is wrong on this machine to crash our game.

I see there's a new nVidia driver out today, so please try that.

If no good, right click on stellaris.exe , properties . compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations", untick everything else in that dialog, Apply, and exit. Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, set display mode to fullScreen, Vsync off, refresh rate 60. Any better?

That sounds like the cursor is off registration. Can I get new copies of those files mentioned in post #2 please?

here is the DxDiag, however before I attach the settings log and etc I must note that recently I have been launching Stellaris from Steam with the -opengl option, as that has seemed to reduce the frequency of crashes. As I have only played about 5 hours over 2 days with this configuration, I can't say for sure the crashes have been solved, considering I once was able to play for almost 4 hours before crashing while on dx11. That said, here you go.

I must be misunderstanding something. How can you still be playing the game when you can't click on anything in the main menu?

And those files do not reflect the settings I suggested in post #8 ... ?
