I'm playing HOI v1.05 usually on "Slower than Normal" mode. I pause a lot, yet the Interface freeeze fairly ofter for very brief amount of time (especially during a war). The game is still very playable but this freezing is slightly annoying.
Currenty my computer has 64MB of SDRAM and one free slot to accomadet another 32, 64, 128 or 256 MB DIMM. Will eviscerating my machine and installing more memory make much of a difference? I read the instructions and it seems easy enough, though I've never taken apart a computer before. Any suggestions on if and how much to upgrade memory would be greatly appreciated.

Memory is very cheap these days. It is one of the best investments to upgrade if you are on a tight budget.

Depending on your operating system, you want as much memory as you can get.

For example if you are on XP you want 512!

On ME 128 is okay but 256 is better.

On 95/98 you can use 128.

So you can see that 64 is really below spec today.

I guess the answer in a round about way is to add as much as you can. ;)

not with win98, it ha trouble managing lots of ram. I can't remeber it if its above 256 or so

ME can handle 256 no problem.

Yeah. It's above 512 MB that the Win9x memory manager get's in a bit of trouble. It simply cannot use any memory in excess of 512 MB. It's no problem inserting more memory. Windows just doesn't use it.

Yup, thanks for clarifying the matter.

I have read the maximum for Win98 & ME is 768MB.
I think to use 512MB-768MB you need to make a change to system.ini:
Code:
[Vcache]
MaxFileCache=524,288
The number can be smaller but no larger.
Windows 98 & ME do not get as much improvement from memory above 256MB as Win NT/2000/XP do.

That was my point, if you do not have much ram, that is the most bang for the buck upgrade wise.
