The Russian army was actually well equipped in 1941 (i.e. NOT obsolete), just very poorly co-ordinated and suffered from logistics problems (for various reasons). Also (and again for various reasons) almost all of the Red Army wasn't even mobilised at the outbreak of war...

P.S.

Even if we count only T-34/KV-1/KV-2 they had more than Germans).

That part is not actually true (about 2,000 iirc), but - Soviet tank production was always higher and their armament expenditure was equivalent to Germanys pre-war :)

Actually I believe that far more than half the Wehrmacht were dragged by horses. I don't have figures handy, but it might be that half the Wehrmacht had only horses and no trucks.

It's in the Kershaw comparison of Hitler and Stalin, about half of the Wehrmacht formations relied on horses for their logisitics.

Well,
I came in and read this thread..

I must say that I started to have doubts about SU strenght playing my first CORE game as Italy.

I decided to take ahistorical route and, skipping the details, DOWed Turkey in early 1941. The SU DOWed me. I was a bit scared in the beginning, but I've been able to stop them early and then I took my CAS and TAC bombers to that front, with almost 70% of my army and a few Ethiopic infantry (for garrisoning).

It's mid '42 now and I took Stalingrad and Uralsk and happily marching into Siberia. Germany took Moscow and Leningrad is about to fall, while Japan is also earning territory.

Looks like a total defeat for the SU.

It may have been easier because I don't have to fight with the Allies (indipendent Italy), but it has been really easy to steamroll over russian units, and that is something I'd never thought being possible (with Italy)!

JUst remember... if the Bitter Peace event fires, you get NOTHING. Germany will get all the territory it has taken, Japan will get the Maritime Provinces, and the USSR will get back all the land you have taken.

The only way you can benefit at all is to release the transcaucasus and central asian republics as puppets.

Well, I feared something similar, but when the Bitter Peace fired I kept my conquers. I'm near Alma-Ata now and looking for SU annexation.

It may be because I'm out of the Axis, I don't know, but I have that territory. Japan got a huge part of SU in the east and the SU is down to just 50 divisions, and my TAC and CAS are destroying any reinforcement they are able to send.

I will be able to Annex SU in late '43 or mid '44 at most, I believe.

I also got Algeria and Tunisia from Vichy France and this seemed a bit strange.. why Germany gives me that land if I'm not in the Axis?

A very historical goal.

Minor nations were minor for a reason. They did not have significant capacity to increase the size of their military. Most of them were forced to import the basic implements of war. Finland was fortunate by having a domestic source for small arms, but very limited capacity for larger weapons.

It should be difficult for all nations to expand their military during peacetime. It should be even more difficult for a smaller nation to accomplish. I know a lot pf players want to play a minor nation and have "Brazil take over the world." There were historical reasons why this wasn't possible. Where the goal of CORE is to create a historical simulation, it is going to be difficult to be a powerful minor nation.

We are still striving to find a balance point with the Soviets. There are numerous occasions where the Soviets will roll over the Germans in a year as well. It is going to be difficult to find that balance where the Soviets are powerful enough to withstand the initial German assault, but not be able to just roll across Europe.

The CORE team appears to have conflicting goals. You want to make the game more challenging but you make the Soviet Union much weaker than Germany. Then you say you want the Soviets weak to be balanced rather than strong so any nations can be played but then say you want minor nations to be unplayable by making them really weak. It's confusing. Do you have a plan or goal for the mod? If all nations made really weak then its not going to be fun to play any nation. Sorry if this sounds harsh. I'm sure others are having similar thoughts. My friend is trying to persuade me to try the HOI2 game again (he's too scared to play multiplayer so only single player is possible) hopefully made somewhat challenging by the CORE mod with Doomsday but I'm disappointed from the reports of it still being way too easy.

The main goal is to make things as historical as possible, and thus implies that we won't want to overimprove the capabilities of the minors or such. Having said that, the goal is never to make them as weak as possible. We don't want to have Bhutan taking over the world as our 'main goal', nor weaken the USSR in such an extent that Germany is guaranteed to win, so to speak. Finding the right balance is somewhat tricky, and in some cases further tweaking is warranted. Overall, CORE is a vast improvement in it's current state over regular DD, but there's definately room for further tweaking and expansion. Migration to DD (for which 0.25 is the first available version), has thrown a spanner in the works as to the actual effect of the modified AI and resulting gameplay. Expect version 0.3 even better than 0.25 and so on.
Reports so far have been conflicting, some games are quite a challenge, some seem to be too easy. I concur that, based on the reports so far, the USSR needs some upgrading, but we have to find out what the changes to the tech tree in 0.30 as well as further tweaks and research priorities will mean regarding gameplay. So feedback from the current version as well as future versions are very welcome!

there should not be any need. There should be 5-year Program events to boost the Soviet IC.

The US industry is fine, but a peace/Great Depression modifier needs to be imposed to keep the US from fully utilizing it unit war breaks out.

Amen brother! :p
