I have a question as per the title. I'm interested in any breakdowns of Soviet losses in their Afghan war by republics, armed services or ethnicities or such like. My googling yielded just a general figure of some 14 500 dead and 53 000 wounded. Ballpark.

Inspired by a throwaway point in an article about an unwillingnes of Belarus to get directly engaged in the Ukraine. Supposedly Belarus had a high rate of casualties per capita in Afghanistan, which resulted in a bit of trauma and an aversion to casualties. I would like to confirm this tidbit myself.

Belarus anti-war trauma dates back to WW II, although i am not sure it still exist at this day, they had really, really high losses.

Idk about Afghanistan but in WW2, Belarus, Ukraine, and Armenia carried more casualties than they should have proportionally. Armenia in particular was never occupied, so the outstanding casualy figure is military dead. AFAIK this carried over into Afghanistan.

WW2 dead by republic:
14% of Armenia
9% of Azerbaijan
25% of Belarus
8% of Estonia
8% of Georgia
11% of Kazakhstan
8% of Kirghizstan
14% of Latvia
13% of Lithuania
7% of Moldova
13% of Russia
8% of Tajikistan
8% of Turkmenistan
8% of Uzbekistan
16% of Ukraine

Amazing how successfully Russia essentially hijacked all the prestige from the sacrifices of WWII.

i think i saw something about this in college, but would have no idea what the breakdown was.

something the Soviets tried in the beginning of the Afghan War was to use Central Asian soldiers in Afghanistan - but they were not exactly welcomed as liberators.

I don't think Russia hijacked it so much as other some other post-Soviet states became bizarrely ambivalent about who WW2. If you think the USSR was as bad as (or worse than) Nazi Germany, why would you celebrate your countrymen dying for it?

oh, Russia's definitely tried to hijack the legacy of WW2.

Meh, every country centres itself in its own historical memory. If Britain or America had experienced a similar degree of destruction I do not think they would behave any differently than Russia does.

America also hijacks WW2. Like when Americans stole the enigma device in that stupid submarine movie.

Russia actively demeans the sacrifices made by the other parts of the USSR, such as in Ukraine or Central Asia.

Tbf I dont think that any country which publishes postage stamps of Roman Shukhevych needs much help demeaning its own WW2 history.
