Once you download the update I would like you to try to start playing MP games. I will check with patric on the status of Vnet but I think it is working so give it a shot. Let me or Blade know of any problems you come across with this new patch. Hope to see you guys in there, Enjoy!

It's not

In my case it,s not working. I was a regular Multiplayer with the 1.01 and 02 patch but like everyone else in the 3rd one, the Mp part wasn't working. Now, for the 4th patch the problem isn't solved. I tried to play with it. But as soon as I press the Internet button or the Valkyrie.net button in the MP menu, my computer freezes up and I have to reset it.

Anyway, we've had a few swedish people testing the latest version and most things have been fixed, including the crashes when countries get annexed, and stability hits when clicking several times.

this was posted by Johan in another thread.

Anybody else having problems with MP in the US version?

Well.. After a night of testing, here are my results for the US 1.04 patch (your milage may vary):

1) The chat CTD bug is still there. Will crash a client often when they try to chat. This is still the #1 most common crash bug.
2) The "Waiting for players" screen has been removed - meaning that the game appears to "hang" at the "loading scripts" stage of loading. This isn't actually a crash/hang.. But is far less informative than previously.
3) Playing with a fast cable connection and PII as host, 4 players was the realistic maximum for a reasonable game. We tested a 7 player game, but not on a faster connection/computer combition. I'm curious how many players a 1 gig+ machine with a T1 could support..
4) We ran into far less "random" CTD bugs. We were able to play the Napolean's Ambition scenario until someone crashed due to chat bug - which is a far cry over 1.02.
5) Lag is still a major problem at higher speeds or large number of players.

So while this wasn't the dramatic improvement we'd hoped for, 1.04 is definately an improvement over 1.02. We'll continue to report on any bugs we find when we start our new long term game.

Then if people CAN play Mp... why can't I ? I used to play with the 2nd patch...why with the 4th one my comp won't let me go farther than the MP menu without freezing ?

I have had similar problems to this since the November betas. For a while they were fixed by updating my Lan driver, so try that. Also check you have disabled any firewalls, with ZoneAlarm active I freeze almost every time.

1) I've never been able to reproduce this, but everyone says its there.. I've looked through the entire chat-code and I'm baffled. Does this happen when you press tab or when you send the chat message?

2) Oops. It's kind of fun that nobody commented on it, and I didn't even notice it myself. For whatever

3) Its been a while since I did my statistics on the datatransfers, but with a big enough bandwidth there should be no limit to number of players.

4) Sounds nice. Any savegames with reproducable crashbugs helps immensly in eradicating the problems.

5) Yes, the amount of data thats transferred is rather large, and since we made the bad desicison to go with DirectPlay as a protocol it means that we have to use tcp/ip for protocol.

The chat crash happens to me when I press shift+F12, as soon as you hit the F12 it crashes. You mentioned pressing tab, am I trying to initiate chat incorrectly, sometimes it does work. It usually happens when I'm about to ask my opponent to save the game.

another question

This might not be the right forum, but if I still have the 1.02 version, should I be OK updating straight through to the 1.04 version, or should I upgrade to 1.03 and then to 1.04.
Thanks

Hi Johan. I too have experienced numerous times the chat bug.

Any chance you might change to UDP soon? It'd help me out immensely with my university firewall.

Thanks,

John

The chat bug occurs immediately upon pressing <tab> or the ctrl-f12 combo. It happens pretty frequently, at least on the NA releases running over an internet connection. I should try running a LAN game just for reference. Obviously you'd know better than I would, but if you're not getting this at all you might try running the NA version. I've never heard of any Swedish customers complaining about this, although it was happening to both a Norwegian and a Dane we play with.

Direct Play (actually, tcp/ip) was a really unfortunate decision, but obviously is beyond the scope of a patch to fix. Maybe for EU3? ;-)

Also, I need to add:

6) Although given that VNet will be rewritten this might not be a big deal. However - with 1.04 you cannot join a game through VNet. You need to note the IP address of the game, use the internet connect option and connect directly. None of us have been able to connect to a game from the VNet lobby directly. A minor problem but a pretty major killer to those not in the know.

In any case, I want to thank Johan once again for spending the cycles on Multiplayer!

It is the wrong forum, but yes go straight to 1.04. If you have modified files (eg EEP stuff) then you'll have to uninstall and reinstall, then go 1.00 -> 1.04 direct.

Isn't it ctl-f12 ? Tab would be more convenient to use. Anyway it seems to crash no matter what, from what I read here.

No chance for such a major change in Eu2. Maybe is a future game.

Johan, have you been testing Lan, Internet or V-net? I wonder if you have been doing Lan while the people having problems are mostly doing the other two. Is there any different except for the user interface screens?

I've been testing all three types.

Just tried it with a 1.04 NA and it does not happen for me.

I'm about to go insane now.

I don't blame you. I just cannot see what the variable might be. I guess you'll have to set up to play a game specifically with one of the people who get the crash all the time.

BTW, my longstanding problem with getting onto V-net - where it throws me off with a message "you have been disconnected" - has been solved. I have to nuke and reformat my PC, and I put win2k on instead of 98se. Bingo.

Let me add my experience to this: I press shift, and everything's fine. At the precise moment I touch F12, BINGO! CTD. This doesn't happen all of the time, mind you. It's rare, but VERY consistently, when it occurs, it's at the PRECISE moment I press F12 after having pressed shift. Is that a clue? Probably not . . .

Any chance of getting UDP in Eu2 1.07?
