I have a similar problem to some of your other posters. I bought the boxed copy of Rome and bought the expansion Vae Victis on Impulse. Every time I try to launch it I get the same runtime error during the "check maplogic" phase. The error message is:

File exception Exception in:.\discfile.cpp, line: 425. Description: could not open file:

It then reports a runtime error.

I tried all the fixes I read about: clean install to a new folder, installing the"runtime redistributable thing" from microsoft, updating my video drivers....but nothing has worked. I get the same error every time.

Can anyone help? Or do I have to buy the first game from Impulse as well!

I don't know whether Impulse's VV required their Rome or not - that should be specified on their website if it is a requirement.

But if it installed I would have thought it would have worked; do check that it installed in the same place - the VV files should overwrite the Rome files.

Incompatibility between what and what? Not sure what you mean.

Search your whole PC for romegame.exe, do you find more than one? If so that's your problem.

When you get the error
File exception Exception in:.\discfile.cpp, line: 425. Description: could not open file:
does it not give a filename afterwards? Generally this error means a missing file so perhaps your download from Impulse was bad. try deleting it and downloading a fresh copy.

I use Impulse lots and haven't had any problems with them. I checked it for you:

You do need to have the former title. I'll download and install VV and see how I do, will be back to tell you what happened.

OK, I've tried to download and install Vae Victus and I don't have Rome installed at the moment.

It won't let me download, without the previous installation... BUT.. it gives you the opportunity to Register your previous Rome title.. so if you Register that prequel, it may then allow you to install the sequel?

Thanks for all your help and advice. I got in touch with impulse and they said that you needed the impulse base game to play VV. They gave me a refund so I'll just get the Gold version (as it's pretty cheap anyway)..

Cheers
