Duke has vassals.
Vassals become unhappy with Duke and rebel.

You are given option of declaring war on rebelllious vassal.

You march to vassal, conquer vassal, siege and take the castle.

Now, it seems there is no way to force the vasal to either become your vassal or to return to previous Duke's patronage. UNLESS you already have that claim which for most places you wont have unless you created the Dukedom.

Instead the county is inevitably independant unless the Duke's forces conquer it. Or even more frustrating, another vassals forces conqeur it and just occupy it indefinately or conclude peace .. whereby the rebel goes independant. Grrr.

Grabbing a claim on the title is too BB expensive.

So over time, if you have lots of principalities/Dukedoms vassals rebel they are able to go independant even when you've whooped them back into line.

Annoying. :(

The trick is to let your Duke's forces conquer the province, as he gets a claim when the vassal rebels and he will also take the bb hit for annexing the count. Just root to rebel's troop and assist in the siege, but withdraw your forces before the province falls. The AI might take a while to conclude peace but they will eventually.

IMHO, not a bug but a game play issue. Also, check the Duke if he cased the rebellion by some nasty traits and revoke his title if necessary to prevent his other vassals from rebelling.

It is a bug, or at least a 'issue'. What you have just described is what I have been doing, it isnt a serious solution tho and you cant ignore how irritating and silly this problem actually is when dealing with large empires/kingdoms. As often the Duke will not have the military forces required to conclude a siege before attrition/wars etc take him out of it and/or another Duke will take the province and in my experience they NEVER annex.

And when you are Emperor of Byzantium trying to micro manage 100 counties its just not viable to siege on behalf of a deficient AI then run away before you actually achieve what you set out to do - take the province back from the rebel on behalf of the Duke.

All this requires to be sorted is an option in your sue for peace list demanding (rather than their title) that they become your vassal or return to the previous arrangement.

It is wholly unneccesary to steal their title just to give it back to them or their Duke.

Often dukes are more powerful than their vassals and if you send a powerful regiment, led by your marshal to aid your faithful duke, you can first defeat the rebellious vassal's force and then have your men aid the duke in his siege. The trick is to not send the regiment commanded by you, so that the duke will lead the siege, even if most troops would be yours.

I understand this. However the AI just doesnt lay siege properly half the time and as usually happens another AI duke will before he can or will turn up and lead the siege over-ruling the Duke's own Marshal. Take the city, and well do nothing. Just plant his flag. Maybe 30 mins later he will agree peace and hey presto the vassal has become independant and its going to cost you BB to sort it out.

Its just not right.

Yes, this is a pain in the backside, it would be nice to declare war, without having a claim and to be able to take land, in the name of your vassals, like the Duke, you mentioned. The problem is, that there are 50 bugs that are a lot more important, which means you should wait for 1.05, before this gets resolved.
