Hey, just downloaded this, playing around. Seems like fun, but one of the vassals of one of my daimyos has somehow come across 12 kokujin, and of course, his lands are plagued by rebellion. Will the AI deal with this on its own, or do I just have to let provinces rebel, reconquer them, and then reassign them to other vassals?

Well the only thing the kokujin can do is cede the titles to his daimyo. I don't believe you can transfer him to your own vassalage and make him a daimyo (which would mean he can have his own vassals and partition his holdings). His daimyo can revoke some of the titles he has, but I'm not sure the AI every demands that. You could try to load into your save as this kokujin's daimyo and demand his extra holdings, but beyond that I'm not sure what to do. Plus I'm not sure how willing he'd be to part with them or how angry he'd be if he does.

Just conquer and reassign. You'll get some free honor that way as well.

From my experience with the game, if a vassal has a courtier/vassal to which he can offer a landed title, he will. Does the vassal in question have that option?

I was pretty worried about the AI when I first started getting pretty big. I thought it may get unwieldy and I would collapse from within with vassals mismanaging their territory. So far I've been pleasantly surprised that this hasn't been the case! I've been giving Daiymo titles out when trusted vassals deserve it, and it's been keeping everyone happy and prosperous.

Now my only fear is that the only thing keeping it together is my 70+ year old clan leader! His successor has great diplomacy and many sons, so hopefully the transition will be successful. So much to think about in this game!

Having the same problem. In the beginning I was caring. After a while not at all. Since I'm already big (circa 35% of the map) I don't even bother with levies anymore. I have a nice huge battle retinue and I use the occasional nearby levies to storm a castle. My standing army plus a couple of hired swords (ronins) do the fighting.

Once a region gets to the rebel hands I raise the levies to reconquer it and give it to someone with max 3 provinces. I believe the trick for your vassals not to have many huge vassals is to make your own vassals Daimyos as soon as possible. Then they will administer the provinces themselves. Otherwise... I have found a vassal of a vassal that was even bigger than me the clan leader. Of course, he was plagued with rebellions.

It's caused by the daimyo's vassal leading the sieges in conquered territory. They will just keep accumulating the territories. If the daimyo wins the siege or you grant the province to a daimyo then the province will get transferred down correctly to a vassal with less than 5 kokujin.
