I used to had two faithful minor allies which came in handy to protect my boundaries. However, I recently vassalized them and during the last war, they didn't declare war on my ennemies. And since it seems you can't be allied with your vassals, I couldn't call them either.

The manual states that the vassal "will be on your side if the war breaks out"...So, what did I miss???

I am not sure about this but I know that you can always ask your vassals to join your alliance if you are the leader. I think your vassals probably had joined another alliance before you asked them.

1) Contrary to the manual, vassels are not automatically on your side during a war.
2) If you are the alliance leader and ask your vassel to join the alliance, they will join. Further, they will not dishonor a request to join a war, if you ask them.

As an aside, it can be useful to leave a vassel out of an alliance if they are not likely to contribute much to the war effort, but hold a position that "protects your flank".

None the less, war or not, you can freely move your forces through a vassel's territory.

The problem is that I can't ask my vassals to join the alliance...err...I was sure I was the leader (I always used to be), but suddenly I'm wondering if last time the alliance ended, it was me or my other ally who renewed it....Well, I believe I'll have to check that.

And my vassals can't really protect my flanks (they are one-province countries) but they're quite useful to fight the armies roaming around
