U get half their monthly income. That's about it. If u want to help them or if u want them to help u in war they have to be in the same alliance but a vassal cannot ally with anyone else but it's master. Or do RMs for that matter.

And another thing about vassals: you can move your troops through their territory whenever you may feel like it. But yes, you still have to recruit them to your alliance.

No, countries can move armies through their vassal's provinces in times of peace, also.

Hmm, I suspect this is a bug. Even the mousepointer shows your not able to (but if you click the army moves there never the less)

Nope, standard feature this one. It was there since 1.0 and is described in the manual. The pointer shouldn´t be greyed out, though...

It's supposed to. I know when one of my vassals is attacked, I'm called upon to defend them. I haven't played as a vassal of anybody else so I can't say for sure how well protected you'd be by your liege nation.

IMO though, the military aid couldn't possibly be worth the money, especially when you consider you get the same deal of mutual protection from an alliance but without having to sacrifice half your income. You can also have more than one ally under the same treaty, and so have even more potential muscle to call upon in times of trouble.

IOW, having a vassal is great. Being a vassal is the pits!

I think vassals should be automatically included to your alliance, or when you join another one, vassals should come along. Especially if you join another, they can't recruit your vassals: no diplomacy allowed. And so they just live in unhappy solitude until some neighbour look: hey, a country without allies. Let's attack! And it must be Murphy's law, because usually the attacker is one of your allies and he calls you too to join the war. All this wouldn't happen, if your foriegn policy would be your vasssals as well.

I agree completely. What possible logic would there be in not inviting your vassal into an alliance? The only reason I can think of would be if they are so disliked by another nation you'd like to have in the alliance that you can't get that other nation to join - and I'm not actually sure if the AI checks relations with members of the alliance beyond whoever invites them in. It'd save a bit of micromanagement to have them automatically included, and that's not a bad thing when there's already so much to keep track of.

Inderdeed, vassals should go with their souveraign.

Ehm, historically there has been lots of times when a vassal didn't like it's master very much.
For a prime example look at Sweden-Denmark (they start out with -200 rel and Sweden with a lot of CB provinces in Denmark).

It would really make a mess in certain areas if an unhistorical change like this would be implemented. If you have a vassal, keep him in your own Alliance (or at least rel +120 so he can't ally with anyone else).

Vassals can't ally with anyone anyway.

Even if it is forced vassalisation, u can also force them to join ur alliance. If they don't follow ur orders, they effectively end the vassalage.
