I'm curious if it's possible for Venice in multiplayer games to go land, instead of naval, unite Italy with strenght of the arm and then go for Balkans to wipe-out OE's presence in that area. In my last game ( Imperial Europe: Renaissance ! ) I've managed to diplo-unite Italy ( via diplomacy, i got Sicily, Sardinia, Malta, Piemonte, Milano, Albania and hold isles on Mediterrean ) and create quite strong country ( altough still behind major powers and, i must say, political situation made it easier for me to accomplish this task ). My manpower with max naval slider is now around 160 ( year 1765 data ) - it means that with max land sliders I would have around 260 - not bad at all ( if i wouldn't go naval ). Yet, still I have to rely more on the ink of the venetian pen, than strenght of my army ( Currently Prussian Freddie cracked my defence in Italy and some diplomacy will be necessary to change probable defeat into wp ).

Ofc history of my country would be different if i would go land ( less colonizing, more land wars, probably not so succesful than diplomacy ). I would go more into military sliders than economic one and...I would probably end like many Venices in many mp games - I would be eaten by more powerful neighbours

More or less, the question is " Is it possible for Venice in multiplayer game, to be major land-warmonger on the board ?", with all these countries around, only waiting to get some nice chunk of italian territory ? My mutliplayer experience is averange ( 2 games as a perm, some subbing ) and I've never seen "Uber-Venice", so I'm really interested if someone managed to unite Italy, Balkans and made other interesting achievements with this country.

Diplomacy Universalis (a country switching game) currently has a rather strong Venice in development. I am the current monarch of Venice (Tonioz and cheech were before me), and have been toying with the idea of going land. If Venice succeeds in diplomacy, I don't see why it couldn't become a real superpower. Well except for that Italy is really difficult to defend. I'll do it or die trying :)

This is the game thread. First post has the link to stats and explains the concept more.

I think that my Venice is stronger, but If your Venice will unite whole Italy...

Italy is pretty manpowerdense.

However, I'd say that realistically for Venice to become a real land power, it will have to permanently disable either Austria or OE.

Either partition Austria with Prussia or grab all slavonic provinces and then some from OE. The first will give you the necessary defensive depth while the other will give you the manpower that will somewhat make up for your lack of depth.

Without either, you'll always be at the mercy of your neighbours.

Give it some time, it's only 1639 ;) I'm merely informing that I want to make a land Venice. However the thing is that in our game one never knows how long time is spent ruling one country, so it might be that the next monarch decides to do something else. But if I get to be in Venice for a long time, we'll see what kind of nation a land Venice will be.

Venice will ever be underdog leaderwise on land compared to the monsters Austria, France and (late) Prussia. Unless you have completely randomized leaders.

Which is rather much of a pain, since people like Turenne or Prinz Eugen prolly sweep the floor with enemies three times their size led by generic leaders. ;)
