I upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04.1 and have been experiencing huge difficulties even to get to the main menu since then : the game does not crashes, but it freezes the whole system, even the mouse cursor on the loading screen (have to reboot using Alt-SysReq-U).

Since I play infrequently, I cannot for sure say it is due to the upgrade, but it did work in July !

What log should I look for ? Should I delete some shader caches ?

System is :
- Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1245 v5 @ 3.50GHz
- 16GB RAM + 8GB swap
- NVIDIA TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650]
- kernel 6.8.0-44-generic
- NVIDIA driver 550.107.02 (no better with the 555 series, and an immediate crash with 560)

This seems like an issue with your setup in some way, given that crash with recent Nvidia drivers! That really shouldn't happen, the latest game patch would always be tested by our QA with the then-latest Nvidia driver.

But quite what is causing this I am not sure! Under Windows that swap file would be WAY too small, I'm recommending 32gb at present. Any chance you could up that, as a test?

And
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/crashes/ folder, attach here the latest (only!) exceptions.txt

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

Thanks for your input. I did up the swapfile to 16GB, but 32GB would not make sense as Linux is not as much of a memory eater as Windows. BTW, the problem I am experiencing is not an OOM, as this is known to cause program termination and a message from the OS, which is currently not happening.

Yesterday I was able to run the game globally fine. This may be due to the fact I reduced the shader quality to medium, disabled bloom and set lod bias to low and lod_fade to false.

There are still many errors in the log, but they do not appear to be display-related. There is also a 218 MB debug.log, but after some early messages, it seems to mainly repeat the same messages as in error.log over and over.

There is no crash log, as there is no crash.

What fps are you seeing in the game before it freezes? What CPU and GPU temperatures?

In the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60. Does that help at all?

Most times (when this happens), it freezes before getting to the main menu, during initialisation. Sometimes when starting a game (freeze on the sky painting image that should briefly appear before the map). One or two times did it freeze after the game started (although once was before unpausing a new game), and I do not remember it being sluggish beforehand.

I will try to watch temperatures next time.

Hi! To clarify - we only test V3 on a specific OS version (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS), but there is no such requirement for the drivers.

@YS1
Your Steam log mentions "Résolution de l'écran principal : 3840 x 2160", but without the full logs we can't see if you attempted to run the game on that resolution. If you are trying to run V3 in your native screen resolution it might not work with your hardware specs.

Yes, I am aware of this, and have been running V3 (as well as eg. CK3 or Stellaris) at 2560x1440 or lower. Setting VSync to off and limiting FPS to 30 seems to have bettered things, and I have been able to use better-than-minimal shaders. I also added 16 GB of RAM which seems to improve things during a long session.

It remains that performance is not as good as in July (I was able to use the best shaders and some additional things like reflections back then).

I will try to see if driver series 555 works as well and if 560 still crashes. Have to try the open kernel versions of NVIDIA drivers as well, since they are going to be the default series in the future.

V3 and the 560 line of NVIDIA drivers both got upgrades, and V3 no longer crashes with 560. It has a slightly better performance than before.
