If your model of Mac only has an Intel video system, that is probably the cause of your problem. This game now only usesw Vulkan as a renderer, not openGL any longer. And Vulkan does not run well or in some cases at all on Intel video Macs. FYI this game has never been supported on that hardware platform since release, so really it's a matter of luck that it ever worked!

If that is the situation you can try updating MacOS to 14.x which may have a newer Intel video driver; if that doesn't help or is not possible, all you can do is revert to the previous game version in the Steam betas tab for the game. Or play on any other machine you have access to with supported hardware. OR if you have Apple Bootcamp installed, play in Windows there.

If however that is not the case - ie that your Mac has AMD video or is on Apple Silicon - that's a different matter; let us know here and we'll look into your case more closely.

I have an Apple M1 chip. That's Intel?

No, it's Apple Silicon, and is used for both CPU and GPU purposes.

While that is not (yet) officially supported hardware for this game, it ought to work. What exactly happens when you run the game from Steam? From Victoria3.app directly from Finder?

It might be an I5. I'll check when I get home.

It gets to the main screen and none of the buttons appear. But when I move my mouse over them, I can hear the buttons getting highlighted or even clicked.

EDIT: it says i5. Am I basically SOL then?

i5 is the CPU; the issue I mentioned above is the GPU, ie the video system. Your Intel CPU Mac may have an Intel or AMD video system - THAT is the key.

Yes, that is it, and is the very problem I mentioned above, I'm afraid!

You can try the options I mentioned above; another possibility I haven't confirmed yet is to switch back to openGL - In your Steam Library right-click on this game and choose Properties. In the Launch Options line, paste this in there:
-opengl

Good luck!

I finally tried that. It just crashed on launch now.

Yep, it looks like that is not an option for Vic3 anymore.

So all we have left are the options I mentioned before
