After updating to MacOS Sonoma, every time I boot up Victoria 3 I get either a black screen, or the Victoria 3 initialising screen. Eventually, I hear the main menu music and in theory should be able to click buttons such as start new game. However, I don't see it. Instead, I still end up seeing a black screen or the loading screen, while hearing the main menu theme. This only happened after I updated to Sonoma. I tried deleting the game and reinstalling it numerous times, as well as verifying the game files. Nothing works. I have tried Hearts of Iron 4 and Stellaris and Europa Universalis 4, and all of them work just as normal. Any ideas on how to fix it so that I can actually see the main menu and the actual game itself and am not staring at the same image?

Edit: decided to include the image as a part of this post

so there is no solution for this issue? after one week I couldn't even play the game and the problem is always the same, and I tried 3-4 time the proposed above solution and still not working

I think it has to do with whether or not you have an Intel Mac or an Apple Silicon chip. I reached out to tech support and that's what I heard anyway.

Ever since the MacOS Sonoma update, I've been experiencing an identical issue. When I launch the game, it freezes during the initialisation phase, accompanied by numerous static rendering glitches. I'm certain it's not a hardware problem, as other games are running perfectly fine.

Furthermore, I've observed that the game begins to slowly consume an excessive amount of RAM upon freezing, utilising 7-8 GB of my available 8 GB. This inevitably causes my Mac to become unresponsive, leaving me with no choice but to forcefully restart it.

Edit specs:

Macbook Pro 13-inch 2020
Intel Core i5 w Intel Iris Plus Graphics
8 GB RAM
macOS Sonoma 14.1

Thank you for sharing your experience, same like mine, I hope they will fix it

Hey all, I briefly wanted to say that after reaching out to tech support it turns out that intel video system macs can't run the game. I don't remember the exact reason why. I hope this helps!!

Yes but how it’s possible that until few weeks all was working ok, and after one update that should upgrade the mac software etc to a better version, it stopped to work? It’s no sense

Hi All, I have the same issues with CK3 and Victoria 3. CK2 works perfectly fine though. I hope they come up with some solution, as I never faced any issues in the past. And someone in the comments mentioned that intel video system Macs can't run these games, but how's that possible, if I played them a few weeks ago without any errors? Perhaps we should start reporting this issue more?

With Macs, video driver updates come with MacOS updates. That's most likely what triggered this.

Note that this game has never been supported on Macs with Intel video! It's a matter of sheer luck that it ever worked.

Thank you so much!! Brief question, will the game work on Apple Silicon chips work with the game?

None of our games are written in native M1/M2 code yet so we are reliant on Apple's Rosetta emulation. So technically speaking that is not supported hardware either.

But yes, our games do work on it in general, users report.

Hi Andrew,

I'm experiencing the same issues. Vic3, CK3 were playing fine until the update. Now, they are all crashing turning non-responsive.

Does this also apply in my circumstances? Please see my hardware specs below for reference.

- 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB
- 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Should I also request refunds for the affected games since they aren't compatible or supported with video intel? I'm unsure if there will be an initiative to troubleshoot this technical debt?

As I said above, this game will no longer work under MacOS with Intel video hardware. Which you do have:
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB
That has never been supported hardware since the game was released, it's a matter of luck it ever worked under previous patches.

So yes, unless you are happy to run an older version of the game, or have access to supported hardware, please seek a refund from the store you bought from.

I'm unsure if there will be an initiative to troubleshoot this technical debt?
I don't expect there will be any developer effort to change this situation. Intel video systems are weaker and slower than dedicated GPUs, which is why they are not supported hardware in the first place. Devs for any game rarely if ever use their time to remedy issues on under-spec hardware.

Does this issue need to have the confirmation tag added?
