Does China still own Taiwan? You can demand that at the very least. I'm not sure which mainland territories would be best to grab...

Chapter One Hundred-Eighty-Five - The War Goal

TSe4DGML_o.jpg

The populace were not that surprised that Japan was now at war with the Chinese Empire. What they were slightly surprised about was what the goal of the war turned out to be.

8Byxp0Ry_o.jpg

Japan demanded Formosa from the Chinese Empire. It had been decided that the Japanese Empire would, if it could, spread out into the islands and land masses of the South Pacific. It had a strong Navy and felt building up a Pacific Empire would be best.

China did call in its ally. Korea. But Japan was not too worried about that.

What remained of the First Home Island Army was ordered west to protect the coast.

bsFdPcOd_o.jpg

In early December, as the Firat Fleet headed out to sea with full Transports, a small Korean Fleet was seen off the coast. And was ignored. It was too small to be a danger. There was already a Army in the western provinces in case it tried to land troops.

plG6zb14_o.jpg

The invasion started on the 21st of December. The First Army should easily take the whole island. And the Navy, when it was available, could hunt down enemy ships. Or continue to block the port.

As this was happening the Province of Edo finished building a Liquor Distillery. And the Province of Mito finished upgrading its rail system. And was ordered to work on building its Fort.

And the year of 1887 came to an end.

An island empire should meet with less opposition from the Europeans at least...

Will Japan annex Korea like in OTL eventually?

Don't think so. Korea is protected by the USA the last I knew. It may join wars without the Americans joining up but if one attacks them the Americans jump in.

Chapter One Hundred-Eighty-Six - Invasion!

PHhxsB77_o.jpg

So the War had started. And Taro Okada was leading the unimaginatively named First Army in their naval invasion.

Uj2b00PL_o.jpg

Not that there seemed to be anybody defending the island. No troops or defenses had been spotted so far. The men lowered the horses and cannons into the tenders and rowed towards the selected shores. It would be a lot easier to land if there was nobody shooting at them. Horses hated being shot out.

HpV4USnF_o.jpg

At the same time the Diplomats made sure that the Russian Empire was friendly with Japan. And not likely to get involved.

aSzWdhiT_o.jpg

By the second day of the year the Province of Tainan had been invaded. It was only a question of time before the peasants, armed with hunting rifles and shotguns, were overwhelmed by the cavalry and the artillery.

The problem was the lack of supplies available on the island itself. As the ownership of the Port was being fought over no food or ammo was being shipped in. Soldiers were starving.

The First Fleet was ordered to set course to hunt down and destroy the nearest enemy ships.

BoewzHaS_o.jpg

Back on Tainan Taro Okada split his forces and sent the newly created Army north to occupy the northern province. He hoped smaller armies would be able to support themselves easier on what they could loot….er…buy from the local farmers and shop keepers.

The 2nd Army would also make sure that the Chinese did not land troops on the northern side of the island without a fight.

Back in the Capital the government increased spending in Defence Spending, Land Units, and Naval Units. It was war, after all, and the Liberals saw no reason to hold back.

5zY97XuF_o.jpg

By the 7th of January the 2nd Army had started the process of occupying the Province of Taibei.

In less than a week it looked like the Chinese were already losing their island and their war.

Things are going well. Will appearances prove deceiving?

Will the ease of Taiwan's conquest inspire Japan to claim more Chinese land before making peace?

Chapter One Hundred-Eighty-Seven - Many Wars

DiyZ0Pir_o.jpg

The Japanese invasion was doing well. But there was some alarm in the press when Korean ships were seen off the coast of Japan.

31BhM3wS_o.jpg

The First Fleet was, of course, sent to deal with them. They were no longer needed to oversee the ground troops.

The enemy ships were heading south and the First Fleet was sent to meet them just south of Korea.

oOkHAUry_o.jpg

But the Korean ships fled to one of their ports and the First Fleet was redirected towards the Chinese coast to block their ports. Or so it seemed. The First Fleet had other plans…

RsMKLZep_o.jpg

There were many wars at the time. Including one between the UK, its many allies, and Transvaal.

p6YXvo6v_o.jpg

The Boer War as it was called in the English press seemed massive. The UK media always had stupid names for things.

RIP Transvaal (and probably Oranje soon). Is Oranje involved in this Boer War, actually?

Chapter One Hundred-Eighty-Eight - Naval Battle

wa0peHRF_o.jpg

Near the end of January a Chinese Fleet were spotted and the Japanese First Fleet was sent to take it.

6Zzkxr4R_o.jpg

The Chinese warships were NOT all warships. It was a mixed Fleet. They were trying to invade Japan!

Then the Province of Niigata reported it had finished building a Machine Parts Factory. Nobody cared.

8EI8SFnz_o.jpg

The Korean ships made a short appearance. It seemed they made up half of the Chinese Fleet. And were falling behind.

SyaR150x_o.jpg

Then there was a debate. What timing. Pacifist sentiments were moving about the pubs and marketplaces. Would the Liberal Party back such ideals or shoot them down? The Liberal was, of course, Pro Military and picked violence.

D3lSP7xo_o.jpg

Then there was the wonderful news that the Chinese Province of Tainan had been taken over.

WLHAABvP_o.jpg

Then there was the Battle of Soya Strait. The enemy had no Capital Ships. The fools!

hQZ1vE9p_o.jpg

The news was greeted with glee by the government. Until they were hit by the bad news.

aIGYt59Q_o.jpg

Seems even while being attacked the Chinese Transports had unloaded their troops and landed on Shumshu. The scum!

The Third Home Island Army was ordered north to wait for a future pick-up. So they could take back the island colony.

xYxKFosw_o.jpg

Then there was good news. The Battle of Soya Strait was a complete victory. The Chinese forces who had landed were not trapped. Time was on Japanese’s time. The Chinese and Korean warships had been sunk.

Japan is defeating China. Excellent!

Who are these pacifists that are undermining the war effort? Why do they not want to see Japan expand? Are they traitors or merely misguided people who are probably idealists?

Chapter One Hundred-Eighty-Nine - POWER! Unlimited Rice Pudding!

A1wJbYDM_o.jpg

In late February of 1888, after the naval victory, the First Fleet was ordered to returned to the Asian coast.

d5Hf11e1_o.jpg

The Japanese military didn’t want the enemy fleets trying to stop the invasions.

2roXfPQG_o.jpg

The enemy was trying to occupy the Province of Shumshu. Their problems was that, even in victory, they would be trapped on the islands. Their ships had been destroyed after all. Where did they plan to go? Were there other enemy ships available?

wQcArt4c_o.jpg

About a week later there was another debate. About Religion. As the Liberals believed in Pluralism that what they pushed for. Let the people believe in what they wished!

The media reported that the Liberals were VERY well liked and supported by most of the voting population.

ovJk12b9_o.jpg

This was the last debate. When all the votes were collected and counted the Liberals had win! Well, kind of. They had formed the Liberal Faction with the Anarcho-Liberal Party. They had beat out the Radical Faction, the Marxist Faction, the Imperialist Faction, the Nationalist Faction, the Conservative Faction, and the Communist Faction.

Did this mean they had enough votes in the Upper House to pass reforms? Only time would tell.

Chapter One Hundred-Ninety - Victory After Victory!

gkWq3bVX_o.jpg

While the Liberals were winning in the elections the Army was winning in the war.

rdcu8yOs_o.jpg

By the end of March the Army had crushed the last remaining defenders in Taibei.

EDuO3yJU_o.jpg

The island of Formosa now belonged to the Japanese.

sV45NZWE_o.jpg

Now to deal with the invaders. The First Fleet was ordered to meet the Second Home Island Army. But then it bypassed that and went to pick up the Third.

lrTyUUBc_o.jpg

As the ships were ordered to pick up the troops the Scientists announced they had invented Capital for Investors. Bankers looked confused at this report. Surely Capitalism had been around for a very long time?

And the Province of Niigata upgraded their Railroad. It now had lemon scented wet wipes.

By mid April the First Fleet had loaded up the Third Army and were directed towards the Coast of Sakhalin.

rzLboDR7_o.jpg

On the 17th of May the invasion had begun. Over thirty-three thousand Japanese men were being unloaded into boats and sent to the beaches of Shumshu.

fgC9otPk_o.jpg

And so the Battle of Shumshu started. With a heavily outnumbered enemy force.

KYJ18SpE_o.jpg

And was easily won by the Japanese forces who lost 121 horsemen and 164 infantry. While the enemy, having no place to retreat to, were wiped out to the last man.

Once the battle was over the First Fleet was ordered into the port to load up the Army. Their next goal was on mainland Asia. China was about to be invaded.

Chapter One Hundred-Ninety-One - Invasion Of Mainland China

JJGsrs9O_o.jpg

The First Fleet, once again carrying the Third Army, headed for new target.

FBocks2g_o.jpg

While the war continued Japan continued to grow, economically, with a Paper Mill being built in the Province of Sendai.

The First Fleet was ordered to the Korea Bay. But China’s ally would not be the target.

He6VF5VT_o.jpg

As the ships set sail the Province of Edo announced it had finished building a Explosives Factory. Nothing could go wrong with putting a explosives factory in the middle of the Capital!

doCIHKNK_o.jpg

A few days later the invasion of China had started. The Third Army, mostly mounted troops and artillery, was being unloaded into landing craft and sent to the shores of the Province of Tianjin.

The Battle of Tianjin was very one sided. Over Thirty-Three thousand Japanese cavalry, infantry, and artillery against just over eighteen thousand Chinese ground troops. They were doomed from the start.

LcOc5kW4_o.jpg

In fact they were all wiped out. But there was the problem. The Japanese Third Army was outnumbered by the surrounding Chinese armies. They would need reinforcements. Maybe? The Chinese military, even with their greater numbers, might not be a match for the smaller, yet superior, Japanese force.

AorYJr7x_o.jpg

Still…..the First Fleet was ordered to head south and pick up some more forces.

Time for me to post my favorite screenshot from Victoria 2. The one where I introduce the Chinese to the new tech I invented called a “machine gun.”

image0.jpeg

Based on some notes I took at the time, approximately 1% of the entire adult male population of China perished in this battle.
