Soon a dark cloud would eclipse the glory of the early victories...
I'm guessing that the battle going on is going to end in crushing defeat...

Chapter Two Hundred-Twenty-Seven - Defeat?!?!

dwdpYb6S_o.jpg

On the 24th of December the government, the media, the public, and even the very Gods themselves were shocked to hear the news of DEFEAT!

f5oMtZVu_o.jpg

The Battle of Zhanjiang had come to an end. The Japanese military had lost over twenty thousand men. Mostly among the cavalry. While the enemy had lost over twenty-six thousand. Mosty among the infantry.

A mixed result. The enemy had win. But only, it seemed, do to their numbers. The Japanese, while defeated, had survived the battle and though skill had killed a LOT of their enemy. Or though artillery.

A few days later the news that the Province of Mito had updated their Fort was almost ignored. Overshadowed by the defeat.

The First Fleet had also picked up the Formosa Guard and was now returning to Hainan.

And enemy forces were trying to free Canton. Again.

Also the Province of Osaka had built a Fertilizer Factory. Nobody cared.

What was Japan to do? What was the military to do? Fight on? Call on the people to take up arms and join the fight?

It was the end of 1890 and the war had taken a terrible turn.

Well unless they can match the Chinese numbers, fighting on is futile...

Oops. I was thinking Chinese but I am not fighting the Chinese. Stupid me. But....yeah...they, Guang Xi and their allies, might have the numbers. But not the skills. And if I increase my numbers....

Edit : Well, I guess Guang XI is also Chinese...this getting confusing....

Chapter Two Hundred-Twenty-Eight - New Year

49kaBfog_o.jpg

1891 came and the results of the Upper House elections were known. The Liberals were not happy.

NfLIukER_o.jpg

The Reactionaries, the Communists, and the Anarcho-Liberals all gained seats. While the Conservatives, Socialists, and the Liberals lost seats.

gB4nck15_o.jpg

The Liberals MAY have lost some of those seats due to the fact their war wasn't doing to well lately. If the defeat had happened after the elections maybe they would not had lost so many seats. Maybe not.

cTbbNQTy_o.jpg

Luckily the last international news had gone out before the defeat also.

The Liberals realized they might have to ask the people for help. This meant TOTAL WAR!

--------------------------

Author’s Notes :

No, I don't have Empire Total War so you're not going to see anything like images from that. I just mean Japan will have to mobilize the people.

They didn't lose all that much support, so that catastrophic defeat mustn't have done much...

Chapter Two Hundred-Twenty-Nine - Wait...What?

niLSWHG2_o.jpg

With the enemy numbers seeming to overwhelm Japan's skilled and experienced militay it was decided to mobilize. It would give Japan numbers while also allowing them to keep a core of professionals.

METPHRq3_o.jpg

So on the 1st of January, of the year 1891, Japan mobilized!

nbxXgSjL_o.jpg

As this was happening the Japanese Army won the Battle of Zhaoqing. The Japanese lost over one thousand and six hundred. Mostly infantry. The enemy lost over twenty-seven thousand. At that point the Second Home Island Army marched east towards Canton.

But this victory pushed the enemy over the edge. In a way.

n8dV92ZF_o.jpg

Around this time Guangxi asked for Peace. But not a White Peace. No, they were willing to give into Japan's demands. Say what? You can't do that. I just mobilized!

They're only losing one state, presumably they fear that if they fight on they'll lose more.

Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty - Renaming The Armies

SVA2ANBm_o.jpg

So on the 4th of January, of the year 1891, Japan won the war against Guangxi, and their allies, and in doing so they got Guangdong. All of it.

iUrNTlW2_o.jpg

Which to be honest was kind of more than they wanted. Japan just wanted Hainan. Now they would have to organize and protect a whole bunch of provinces.

The First Fleet was directed to take the Formosa Guard back to Taibei.

WL8c9RWU_o.jpg

And the government remembered to demobilize before the economy was too messed up. Still the Army and the Navy would be receiving new units anyway.

The Second Home Island Army was renamed the Gunangdong Guard.

The First Home Island Army, what was left of it, was joined to the Fourth Island Army and the whole formation was called the First Home Island Army. Which would be returned to the home islands when the First Fleet was available.

And the Third Home Island Army, in Edo, was renamed the Second.

uCXB12Fa_o.jpg

Also new maps would be made and posted at government buildings, news stands, schools, and outhouses.

pjDMFJaK_o.jpg

By the 10th the Formosa Guard had been returned to their station and the First Fleet was ordered to return to Hainhan to load up the First Home Island Army.

And as this was happening a Regular Clothes Factory had been built in Osaka. Oh goodie.

Sounds like being an empire isn't all that great after all...

Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-One - Building Up The New Colonies

WunRx9Va_o.jpg

On the 14th of January, as the crowds in the streets cheered and waved flags and set off firecrackers, the government got to work with the new territory it had gained.

Ew21n1e8_o.jpg

First, the Province of Canton was ordered to expand its Naval Base and Fort.

aPNAKUF8_o.jpg

Then the Province of Zhaoqing was told to expand on its Fort.

k5i6CCF6_o.jpg

The Province of Zhanjiang was told to expand its Fort. It seems it was already working on its railroad system.

BCr6bhRI_o.jpg

And the Province of Hainan was ordered to expand its Fort. They too were already working on their rail system.

Now if only the Chinese armies would get out of the new colonies. They were annoying.

That's a lot of forts to expand, but it should be useful if Japan and Guangxi ever end up at war again...

Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-Two - Checking On The Other Colonies

rgi7YKgS_o.jpg

Formosa

The government, of course, after pouring funds into the new region decided to check in on the other colonies. First they decided to take peerk at Formosa.

The Province of Tainan was working on upgrading their Fort, their Nevel Base, and their Rail system.

sHUFIp3S_o.jpg

While in the Province of Taibei they were upgrading their Fort and Rail system. For some reason they were doing nothing with their Naval Base.

8xPiDX99_o.jpg

Japanese North Borneo

Then they decided to check out their colonies in Borneo. First stop was the Province of Api. Kind of flat plains region. They were upgrading the Rail system. The Fort was as advanced as they could get it. On the other hand the Naval Base was basic as it could be.

Then there was the Province of Brunei. Where the Brunei Guard was stationed. Their Fort and Naval Base was a good as they could get. But they were upgrading their Rail system.

And there was the Province of Bintulu which was working on updating their Fort and Railroad. But they still had a very basic Naval Base.

Then there was the Province of Tarakan. A coastal province full of mountains. They were expanding on their Rail system and was working on their Fort. Once again they had a very basic Naval Base.

The Province of Samarinda was mostly jungle. They were updating their Fort and Rail system. But like the other provinces they had a very simple Naval Base.

The Province of Muraleve was upgrading their Fort and Rail system. But being a inland province they had no Naval Base.

The Province of Sintang was also a inland one and had no Naval Base. But they were upgrading their Fort and Rail system.

The Province of Pontianak had a very advanced Naval Base and were upgrading both their Fort and their Rail system.

So it looked like the other colonies, at least those in the south, were doing pretty well.

Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-Three - Meanwhile...

TxFPQvQt_o.jpg

While the war was over the nation kept growing. In the Province of Hakodate a new Regular Clothes Factory open. Now the kids had someplace to work instead of playing in the streets and being happy.

zYDFBTaB_o.jpg

While this was happening the Japanese government focused their attention ont the islands north of Hokkaido. Islands that the Russians seemed to want. Tough.

Shumshu, for example, with updating its Rail system. While leaving the Naval Base and Fort alone.

And the Island of Etorofu was also upgrading its Rail system. While the Fort and the Naval Base were being left alone.

Of course another foreign business was seized. The poor hot dog vendor watched in horror as the franks were stomped on and his stand tipped over.

Later on in January the Province of Niigata finished upgrading their Fort and the Province of Edo also opened a Regular Clothes Factory. And more children found their free time taken away to work in the factory.

7eHk9UkM_o.jpg

On the 25th of January the First Home Island Army finally got picked up by the First Fleet. Well, some of it. Twenty-eight thousand, mostly infantry, could not be loaded onto the Transport. They would have to wait for a the First Fleet to come back and pick them up.

9D6PJ6qs_o.jpg

So the other twenty-one thousand or so were being taken by the ships back to the home islands.

AuX2UvpT_o.jpg

By February the only war happening was the Egyptian, so called, Liberation of Suda. The world was KIND of at peace right now.

wcUvq34b_o.jpg

At least the Great Powers were not at war. At the moment.

Won't somebody think of the children?!

Chapter Two Hundred-Thirty-Four - Post War Adjustments

4jJfUZg2_o.jpg

It was reported on the 16th of February the Province of Sendai had built a new Paper Mill. More jobs for the men, woman, and kids.

KieUDJv3_o.jpg

On the 18th the First Fleet had delivered the 1st Army and was able to join the 1st Fleet. The now expanded First Fleet was ordered to return to pick up the First Home Island Army.

eMYYjuqz_o.jpg

The international news had some information of the Japanese war with Guangxi but much of it was full of news from the rest of the world. It seems the US had invented something called a telephone. While the Mexican government had invented the quick-firing guns. And the price of oil had dropped on top of all that.

By the 13th of March the First Fleet was picking up the First Home Island Army and preparing to take them to Kagushima.

pFziIjFR_o.jpg

A Engineer Unit was formed in the Province of Pontianak and was ordered to join the Brunei Guard.

Nstr7qll_o.jpg

Around the same time a Hussar unit finished training in the Province of Taibei and was told to join the Formosa Guard.

LyLi7O6X_o.jpg

By the 4th of April the First Fleet delivered the First Home Island Army and now the two armies found there was not enough rations and other supplies to support them.

smCqXHQc_o.jpg

The 1st Army was renamed the Third Home Island Army and ordered to the north.

hxeh05zl_o.jpg

And the First Home Island Army was ordered to Osaka.

The military was starting to settle down and benefit from the war.
