CTD on main menu - problem with multiple Paradox titles on Linux

Game Version
1.1.2

What OS are you playing on?
Linux

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Have you tried verifying your game files?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
10

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
Hi, I'm having a problem where the game (no mods, fresh install) crashes to desktop just before loading the main menu. This also happens with my CK3 install and I can see from googling it I'm not the only one to have this issue. Error log attached.

Can anyone shed any light? I'm running this on a Dell Inspiron 15 7510 running Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. It has an an Intel chip and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Mobile, I'm using the 525 proprietary driver from NVIDIA and don't have problems with games from other publishers (tbh this issue doesn't look like a hardware compatibility problem?).

As an addendum to this, Imperator: Rome seems to run perfectly for some reason so I don't think it's a general issue with the Clausewitz engine.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
Try to launch the game on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS?

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?

I have attached a save game
No

Hi, jasmith93,

Thank you for reporting this! Apologies that we don't have good news, but unfortunately, the Linux Ubuntu 22.04 system isn't currently officially supported, so we won't be able to assist with this issue. Only Ubuntu 20.04 is officially supported at the moment.

Cheers!

@jasmith93
Could you upload the zipped crash logs found in your home/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3/crashes ?
While we technically don't support 22.04 yet, the game is running fine on my 22.04 machine, so the startup issue must be caused by something else!

@PDX_Sosanna funnily enough the crashes folder is empty. I have no idea why, I've just tried to restart the game a few times and each time it's crashed to desktop before loading the main menu. I've attached the entire contents of my logs folder if that's any use

Moving the thread to the Technical Support forum.
In the meantime, could you try to uninstall the game, delete the "home/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3" that contains the launcher files and then install the game again? To my limited knowledge it's either the launcher not being able to parse the settings files properly for some reason or some machine-specific issue.

Game version should be 1.2.4 now. Did that update help anything?

And your launcher ought to be 2023.3.1 - is that right?

What other PDS games have this problem for you, just CK3?

What happens if you run those games' executables from a terminal command line? What output do you see if it fails there?

Thanks both. I just did a clean install, having deleted the launcher files.

I'm now on game version 1.2.7 and launcher version 2023.4.1.

However, initially, it gave me the same problem when I ran from the launcher. It wouldn't even get into the main menu before crashing to desktop (and on one occasion, crashing my whole laptop).

So I ran from the binary, and it still crashed, BUT then I ran the binary from terminal with Steam closed, and it worked perfectly. Great!

However, when I open steam and try and run it from steam NOW, while it does actually get to the main menu, once I'm on a loading screen for the game, either new or saved, it crashes to desktop again. So I do think this is something to do with the connection to the launcher, or Steam, or both.

I've attached some updated looks for you to have a look at.

I have no idea what could cause this constellation of symptoms to you, we are just not seeing it for other Ubuntu users.
