You kinda skipped the biggest franchise they have, mate. Well, biggest until CK2 and EU4 came along anyway.

But that's beside the point. It's confirmed that the next PDS game will NOT be a sequel to an existing franchise. Later down the line, V3 will probably happen, but for now don't hold your breath. :)

There is no new engine. They're still using Clausewitz.

So what are the main differences from 2.5?

Hard to imagine a new PDS franchise, they tried with March of the Eagles and Sengoku but I guess those weren't too successful, only kind of acting as previews for CK2 and EU4.

Also, hopefully some MotE improvements will be implemented in EU4, like how fortresses behave and maybe something like March to the Sound of Guns.

Well, both March of the Eagles and Sengoku were more like side projects. Actual new AA title on the scale of EU, HOI, CK and Victoria would be interesting.

They have covered most aspects from the 11th century to the WW2, so I can't really picture a brand new major franchise for them. East vs. West fills in their biggest gap so far.

Please, please tell me the next game will be set in China.

I want PDS game that starts from Fall of the Western Roman Empire and end when TOG starts, it would be mix of ck2 and eu4 mechanics, also one PDS game from 1 AD to fall of Western Roman Empire (476) would be great too.

Biggest gap obviously is pre 11th century....

That would seem highly unlikely. IMHO China is too limited and unpopualr and would as such suffer the fate of Sengoku. But you never know what ideas PDS staff has and how adventurous they can get after succesfull titles. :)

I'd a love a game about Mongol conquests but that's just me.

it would be strange seeing as paradox games have a tendency of being banned in China.
"Paradox announces: Hearts of Iron - China edition!

Take the role of Mao Zedong and lead the Red Army into victory against the evil baby eating Japanese! After you have defeated Japanese menace, face off with the corrupt and tyrannical Nationalist troops, led by Chiang Kai-Shek. Liberate Tibet from the clutches of Dalai Lama and his feudalist lackeys! And finally, face off directly against the arch evil of US imperialists, and save the forces of comrade Kim Il-Sung during Korean War!

Can you change history and wipe out the Nationalist remnants in the province of Taiwan? Do you help comrade Kim achieve the dream of unified Korea? Or will you fail to follow in the Great Chairmans footsteps, and let China fall prey to the Japanese, Nationalists, Feudalists and US imperialists. Only the wisdom of Comrade Mao can save China!

Release date: October 1st."

I would prefer if they held off Victoria 3 for a while, until a better engine and more powerful computers become widespread. That way, theres a better chance that Paradox will make a better economical model without the game being impossible to run.
