Video problem (Binkplayer with EU 2)

All of those who have problems with the video player and need to cancel it or need to rename their AVI folder, please post me your configuration here. I need the same configuration as in the "running problems thread":

• Operating system (Windows 9x, Windows Me, etc.)
• CPU & speed
• Memory
• Free hard disk space on the drive EU is installed
• Video Card brand and model number
• Sound Card brand and model number
• CD-ROM or DVD-ROM brand and model number (firmware if you know it could also be useful)

Maybe we can be able correctly identify the problem and bring it up to Paradox and see if there is something that can be done.

I'm using Windows Xp and sometimes the bink player crashes as soon as I start the game, which continues to run normally (I'm able to play the game and see the introduction). When I reboot Windows Xp notices me that a program has produced a serious error and so on.

Sometimes the bink player does not crash and I'm able to see the "Strategy First" videoclip.

I'm running EU2 USA patched (before the patch the game would not start) on a 1.2 GHz AMD with 512 MB Ram, VIA Chipset, GeForce 3 (Asus V8200) 64 MB Ram. I have two drives: a NEC DV-5800A (1.09) and a Plextor PX-W1210A (1.02).

Yet another configuration...

You asked for it, here goes:

Running EU2 1.01 on a Dell Precision 420 Workstation with:
Win XP Pro with the latest compatability updates as of 12/16/2001.
Dual 733Mhz PIII processors.
256Mb RDRAM.
53.6 Gb of Free disk space on C:. where EU2 lives.
GeForce 2MX 400, generic brand.
Crystal Sound Fusion onboard sound.
Lite-On LTN483S 48xmax cdrom drive.
Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608.

I can get firmware numbers and subrelease numbers for these drivers, but I'm pretty sure the answer is going to be self-evident and will have to come from the fine degenerates who produce Bink Player technology. Any tips on disabling the startup film so I don't have to play the game on my POS laptop?

Just for shucks and giggles I'm going to try updating to the latest detonator drivers from nVidia. If it works, I'll report back.

the clue to your problem is in my first post as well as in the "running problems" thread...

You need to rename your AVI folder to AVI_OLD (or anything).

BtW, BinkPlayer is not advertise to support XP and so is EU 2. If you check carefully on the box, XP isn't in the supported OS

However, the Binkplayer aside, the game works just fine under XP.

Renaming the AVI works.

In fact, I used this tip to get Civ3 to run on my machie and skip the bink videos.

It sure is annoying when you can't play a game because the stupid intro video doesn't work.

IMO, developers should save the money they spend on the video and blow it on beer;-) Especially for strategy games.

I find that bink player works (XP Pro), but doesn't play unless you press a mouse button, when the screen goes black. After that, the 2 videos appear (which I hit Esc on), and the game runs fine

At times I have the same result as Bokonon - just a blank screen 'til I click then things go as normal. My biggest problem is that when I start it up normally the arrow turns to an arrow with an hourglass and then after about 3 sec. turns back to the normal cursor arrow and nothing happens - no game no blank screen - nothing. The only way I can get it to run is to re-insert the cd and click the PLAY option of the autorun screen. Then it acts as I have mentioned above. This really sucks.

That's probably why XP isn't on the suported OS list

Experiment!

Zobin - you seem like a helpful fellow - would you try an experiment for me please? I cannot do it myself as I dont have the commercial copy of EU2 yet.

Rename your AVI foldert back to the original.
Now go to Control Panel/Display and set your "Refresh Rate" to 75 hz.

Now try running the game and see if Binkplayer kicks in.
If it doesnt then just put the refresh rate back to "Optimal" or "Adapter Default" or whatever it was before and rename the AVI folder as before.

The reason I have suggested this is because I have just reinstalled an oldish game (Cutthroats) and the intro movie wouldnt work. I did the refresh bit above and it now works perfectly! The monitor appeared to be going out of scan range.

I get a similar problem to Sonny's. Whenever I launch the game, the cursor turns into an hourglass for a few secs and then goes back to the regular arrow and nothing happens. EU2 remains listed among the running tasks but even when I re-insert the CD with auto-insert ON and click on PLAY when the screen pops up, nothing changes. I tried to rename the AVI folder, even downloaded RAD Video and replaced the binkplayer. Nothing seems to be working

*update on running problem*

managed to get the game to run
here's what i did:
clean reinstall of win98
installed directx 8.1
installed newest graphic card drivers AFTER installing directx
clean install of EU2
applied patch
restart windows every time before launching EU2
disable all TSRs but explorer and systray

i am monitoring all new programs i am installing. i am hoping to pinpoint the trouble program that causes EU2 to run properly on AMD systems (if there's such a program).
