This is a spin off form my attempt at a FRG AAR which was a bit of a failure for various reasons. When you can invade the USSR in 48 with 58 Bundeswehr divisions and you have one of the best navies in the game courtesy of the USA which also nukes the USSR for you 4 times something is wrong. This time around I have chosen the DDR to try out.

de-ddr.gif

Time to build the 4th Reich. To play as the FRG or DDR you have to defeat Nazi Germany and either manually create the state or redraw the borders with the German surrender event. Compared to an American created FRG the DR has alot better sliders for war, but the tech teams are average and I have inherited the USSR doctrines. I don't have a decent tech team for armor, and mostly level 4-5 teams in various areas. Unlike the FRG you don't really inherit some of the best teams of the fallen 3rd Reich. You do get Heinkel but you have no teams with fields in rockets, nukes and weak naval tech teams and pathetic naval doctrine tech teams. Thats a naval team researching new tanks. Yep my teams are that bad. I'm tempted to turn tech team takeover on and go and capture Skoda but this will make things interesting.

ScreenSave1.jpg

Unlike the FRG game I didn't go to far over the top in terms of equipment the DDR would inherit from the USSR. I gave them X4 armored divisions, X6 CAS, and around 8 TAC bombers and a couple of mech divisions and 1 HQ. In 43 I set up a large X3 serial run of factories due for completion in 46. The peoples navy inherited from the Soviets are 12 destroyers and 10 transports. This DDR also a naval port in Villa sometingorother on the NW coast of Africa. My naval doctirnes stink and I'm behind on encryption as well. The massive starting army including units the AI has built over the last 2 years.

ScreenSave2.jpg

I wanted the DDR to have a small army I can build around in the future. Nothing to exciting but it will do. Finally I'll write a few words on the state of the world.
ScreenSave0.jpg

Germany was crushed by the Soviets in early 43 after a Soviet DoW in mid 41. Germany didn't want to launch Barbarossa. The remaining Axis powers were crushed by mid 43, Bulgaria switched sides. Italy, Republican Spain and Portugal were liberated from the mess. I couldn't liberate Yugoslavia so I created Croatia and and gave them Yugoslavia's provinces. The redrawing the border event also fired and created Romania, Luxembourg, Denmark and maybe some others. Vichy France was invaded and I allowed them to live in return for a treaty and some land in North Africa I couldn't get to. Since France, Holland and Belgium were in the Allies I couldn't give them the land back and I didn't want it as the USSR. I created Flanders and divided France up between Flanders, Italy, and Republican Spain. On May1 I released all the remaining puppets in Europe, DoW the Japanese to help the Allies out and the celebrate May1 returned the DDR to self rule. Flanders also rules the Dutch lands as well.

Some self imposed rules.
1. No alliances with major powers (USA/England/USSR/Japan)
2. No invading the USSR while they are busy in Asia.

I'm alot weaker than the FRG game I tried and I don't have an American suger daddy. I'm also very low on resources and have to import 100+ metal and 50+rare materials from the USA and USSR. The total armed forces of the DDR

13 arm/mech/mot
23 Infantry
4 Garrison
13 destroyers (41 models w/ firecontrol)
10 transports
11 TAC
6 CAS

Most of it is 41/43 vintage. I have alot of IC though so lets see what happens in the postwar world. Woder if Israel, India/Pakistan etc will form.

DDR is interesting choice, but it's even better to play this nation in Mod33 than in vanilla game. DDR has many events and special storyline in Mod33 and it's realy nice experience to play with them.

I never tried to play DDR in standard game, but I think your setup is very interesting. Will follow.

If you coup Germany in 1936 as a communist nation they become DDR. You also still get the normal build up to war events which is a bonus. Unless you break with Moscow (in which case this will be an epic fight) I don't really see who you can fight.

Asalto haven't modded the game yet but I'm considering what mod I want to use. Kaiserreich and DAIM are near the top of the list methinks.

Quaazi the Comintern is only the USSR and Mongolia. I released most of the puppets as the Soviets. As a former human played natin though the Soviets have a massive army, 2000+ manpower, huge IC, very experiences troops and generals and Moscow and Stsalingrad have level 10 fortifications. I also deployed them reasonably well vs Japan in the east with most of the army in the west.

ScreenSave3.jpg

The USSR has over 500 effective IC to play with and huge manpower to abuse it.

I'm gonna cheat and turn tech team capture on. The main reason is I want to have the option of invading the USA later in the game. The DDR has no decent armor team which I can handle but critically they have no teams with decent fields for secret weapon research and I might need nuclear powered aircraft carriers or whatever. I haven't really played a late game before and I want to use the ate game toys.

It had been over 3 years since the German forces had dominated Europe. A cabinet meeting was called.

ScreenSave4.jpg

The DDR had been independent for over a year. Walter Ulbricht the proverbial sneak had managed to fool Stalin into letting the DDR become independent. The USSR had been over extended and a truncated DDR was thought to be of little threat to anyone. With no navy to speak of to threaten the Allies, and outclassed by the Red Army the DDR was hardly seen as a regional power even.

"Good morning Gentlemen" Walter spoke to the gathered commiunist yes men. There was no dissent the Stasi made sure of that. Turning to George he asked "How is the foreign office doing"?

George replied. "As to your orders we have engaged in heavy trading primarily with the USA and USSR. due to the massive industrial buildup over the last 3 years we are critically short on metals and strategic resources. A large amount of our industrial production is dedicated to creating goods for trade. I will now turn the table over to our esteemed colleague Mr Hermes".

Hermes stood up and announed "Thank you George. Our glorious socialist republic can now afford to expand production of military hardware. The workers are currently producing rocket sites and infantry for the army. A few motorised infantry are also being produced so we can have some combined arms corps. Existing tanks are slowly being phased out as the new T44 is being made available. The peoples navy hass put in a requst for some new ships. In the future we are looking at building 6 brand new super heavy battleships so guard our shores against capitalist aggression". Finishing he sat down and glanced at Hans Kahle the head of the army. Clearing his voice he stood up and addressed the gathered ministers.

"The Nationale Volksarmee (NVA)continues to expand. We have 48 divisions to defend the fatherland with. The army is top heavy with armor and motorised units but new conscripts are only to happy to join the glorious peoples revolution. Another 6 infantry divisions will be ready shortly. I beleive our head of the Luftstreitkräfte der NVA has something to say".

Willi Bredel stoods up and cleared his throat. "The Luftstreitkräfte stands ready to defend the Volksreich comrades. At present we have 6 squadrons of ground attack aircraft and 11 squadrons of tactical bombers. We are critically short of interceptors with only 2 squadrons. They are rocket interceptors and lack the required range for any defensive operations we carry out. More research is needed to upgrade our craft to turbojet planes which some of the other countries have. I request that we d so at the next available oppourtunity. I would also like to request we build some more bombers and ground attack planes. That is all".

Walter stood up with a sly smile on his face. Thank you for your reports gentlemen. Unfortionately due to disagreements over the disputed sudetenand I have just got reports indicating our socialist brothers in Czechoslovakia have been conducting cross border raids. I have alerted the NVA and we will repel this unprovoked aggression".

ScreenSave6.jpg

"I have assigned orders and our forcs are ready to cross the border". The room sat stunned. In the early dawn light not to far away the sound of artillery opening up shattered the predawn silence. "The people march- for the revolution attack".

The DDDR had inherited Nazi Germany's archives. Some old planning papers from the 30's were brought out and updated. Operation Fall Grun was about to proceed. The Guards at the Czech border were brushed aside as they were heavily outnumbered.
ScreenSave9.jpg

The NVA moved rapidly through the Sudetenland area

ScreenSave10.jpg

ScreenSave11.jpg

A pocket in Prague is rapidly eliminated. The advance continues.
ScreenSave13.jpg

The DDR is in no hurry to defeat the Czechs. Maximun advantage is taken to train the green troops and for inexperienced DDR generals to learn on the battlefield.
ScreenSave14.jpg

Eastern Slovakia falls to the rapidly moving NVA.

The last of the Czech remnants have been reduced to a pocket.
ScreenSave17.jpg

Which is rapidly eliminated.
ScreenSave18.jpg

The Czechs welcome their new socialist brothers in arms, liberating them from their communist master and being replaced with new communist masters. For the Reich erm people.
ScreenSave19.jpg

Foreign reaction to the new Reich is muted. Relations with the UK, USSR and USA plummet while the USSR and USA cancel all trades with the DDR. Resource stockpiles are high enough to sustain industry while the foreign office endeavors to restore relations to their previous levels. After a few months new trade deals are signed with the USSR and USA to keep our industry running. New technologies allow the construction of super heavy battleships. Orders are sent out to the DDR's shipyards.

ScreenSave22.jpg

Meanwhile Japan continues to hold out vs the world. Despite losing most of Asia to the Soviets and Americans, New Zealand falls to the IJA and Australia isn't to far behind.
ScreenSave21.jpg

A few months later with the writing on the wall Australia falls to the IJA as well.

the 4th reich is rising!

Hopefully we will see. Importing resources seems to be the main problem ATM. I'll see if any more DoW result in having all my trades canceled. Also trading alot of supplies for $$$$ so I can steal blueprints and repair relations with my trading partners.

Hungary was the next victim.... erm country to know the glory of liberation via the NVD. Hungarians everywhere rejoice at the approach of German soldiers. 5 years had passed since the passage of the Red Army.

The opening battles of the Hungarian Peoples Liberation of Glory offensive.

Debrecen falls after a 2 day battle exhausting the NVA
ScreenSave5.jpg

The assualt is quickly ordered on Szegad before Hungarian survivors of Debrcen can regroup.
ScreenSave6-1.jpg

Pecs fals to an amphibious assault. The Hungarians are surrounded.
ScreenSave7.jpg

The final assualt is ordered on the capital. Hungarian resistence collapses, and Hungary is annexed. Well trained NVA garrison troops much in to spread the word of the communist utopia. Due to The capitalist swines corruption, DDR bribes ensure no critical trades are canceled. The adiciton to money and consumer goods will be their undoing.

The artillery had fallen silent for now in Europe. Almost a decade had passed since Austria had joined the third reich. Unfortionately they didn't seem eager to join the fourth reich, despite being Stalinist themselves. Herr Ulbricht didn't intend to give them any choice in the matter. The NVD had expanded in size and over 80 divisions were ready for battle.

ScreenSave10-1.jpg

Eastern Austria under assault on a wide front.

The front line collapsed under pressure.

The Austrian last stand. A brief attempt to breakout is attempted but an immediate counterattack crushes the Austrians which leads to....

Victory after a 10 day campaign. Austria rejoins the Volksreich which now dominates central europe.

Probably summer 48. I seem to be hitting a glass ceiling ATM as a huge amount of IC is required to produce supplies for trade. Manpower is gonna be a problem.

One week after May Day 48, and 3 years since self rule by the people, Poland couldn't get a break. The Polish communists refused to toe the line as put forth by the glorious socialists.
ScreenSave0-2.jpg

The NVR attacks across a wide front. The largest geographic offensive launched by the 4th Reich.
ScreenSave5-1.jpg

The main armored thrust ultimately aimed at Warsaw.

In the distance long lost Konigsberg beckons. Sigh......

26 Polish divisons bite the big one.

Warsaw is surrounded, which leads to.

Prussian lands rightfully rejoin the Reich. Only Konigsberg is left to be reclaimed.

Fresh from the victory in Poland, troops are rushed west. The oppressed peasants of Flanders scream out for liberation. The NVR is only to happy to help. The navy is deployed for the first time, but according to intelligence reports Flanders has constructed no ships.
ScreenSave15-1.jpg

Reistence is light and sections of the border are unguarded.
ScreenSave16-1.jpg

Attack. NVR troops on the march.
ScreenSave17-1.jpg

Resistance is very light and the armor blitzs through northern France. Numerous pauses are called for as the infantry struggles to keep up. High command treats it as a training exercise ensuring that the maximum amount of troops are used against minimal defences. The troops and generals gain experience.
ScreenSave20.jpg

The high command almost feels sorry for Flanders. Almost.

The main event will be vs the USSR or VS the Allies. ATM I'm just colecting tech teams from around europe as Italy and Sweden are now part of the Reich. Update later (4am here)

The cabinet meeting was called to order. Fantastic news was broadcast to the citizens of the Volksreich. The summer of 49 was a mild one and the NVR had been busy.

ScreenSave38.jpg

ScreenSave46.jpg

ScreenSave48.jpg

The Reich now stretched from the Atlantic to the Soviet frontier. Only the Balkens, Portugal and parts of Scandinavia existed outside the Reichs borders. Walter could hardly keep a stupid grin off his face. IN front of him he had several reports from his fellow cabinet members.

ScreenSave49.jpg

Production of armaments was up althought the army hadn't expanded much due t o manpower issues. New jet interceptors were being delivered along with new models of ground attack craft, tactical bombers and turbojet powered naval bombers. Casualties had been light in the campaigns, the corrupt west continued to trade resources to the Reich although captured stocks most likely meant if the worst came to the worst current industrial production could probably be sustained for a year or two. Even oil stockpiles where sufficent and probably could have sustained the fallen Wehrmacht for a couple of years in Russia. The finest minds in Europe were helpoing develop new methods of destruction for the Reich.

ScreenSave50.jpg

The extensive rocket base facilities constructed a few years ago were starting to pay huge dividends. In particular SAAB brought much needed technical know how to the Reich. Of course the Stasi encouraged the engineers, and if they continued co-operating the engineers may even be able to visit them under house detention supervision. 2 reports stood out in particular. One was marked "Conditions in Occupied Europe" from and the other was Naval Losses. Both were negative in tone. Turning to the Chief of Staff Walter demanded "Herr Scheelen explain yourself". Grim faced the head of the Navy stood up. "With respects Herr Ulbricht the Volksmarine has excelled in every theatre it was deplotyed in. Numerous Italian, Swedish and Spanish vessels now rest at the bottom of the ocean for the loss of only 1 Battleship in combat". The navy head didn't point out that at the time the DDR only had 6 improved super heavy battleships. He continued "in addition the Volksmarine now has 11 such ships in the fleet along with numerous modern destroyers and 6 flotillas of the most advanced submarines in the world. Unless you are planning on provoking the Americans or English we have the best navy in the world".

Unfortionately for him Walter was referring to the fiasco of convoy QP-71. 14 flotillas of unescorted transport ships decided to return to port during the Spanish campaign. They ran into a small Spanish task force and only one flotilla made it to the nearest port heavily damaged. 13/22 transports had joined the Italian and Swedish navies. The rest of the cabinet sat stunned as Walter verbally ripped the man apart. Comparisons were made to the former Fuhrer's tantrums. Luckily for him the DDR needed his skills to much so he got to keep his job. New orders were sent out to the local naval yards about replacement ships. Somewhat expended Herr Ulbricht turned on the Chief of Staff Herr Wollweber- "report" he snapped. Unfazed the gritty army man stood up. Bluntly he said "No more foreign expansion". Dumbfounded the cabinet ministers sat in a shocked silence. Narrowin his eyes Walter merely replied "please explain".

Pulling out numerous charts Wollweber replied "The DDR has insufficent manpower for foreign expansion. Partisan uprisings have occured in the lands of Poland, France and Sweden despite a heavy garrison presence in the former two countries. Insufficient amounts of recruits are available to expand the army as most are being drafted into garrison divisions being trained up. Between the required garrison units and the rapid expansion of the Volksmarine and Luftstreitkräfteany gains in the NVA will be very modest. In addition the army needs to be reorganised, generals promoted and the armored and motorised units rganised into corps. With winter approaching I doubt we will have any time for further liberations in 1949, and I feel we should consolidate our gains for a year, maybe 2. The manpower losses from the last war were crippling and we don't have the resources available that the Nazi Fuhrer had. Also we have no allies and are unlikely to get any due to our perception as an aggressor nation".

Walter sat down with a thoughtful expression on his face. "Very well gentleman dismissed".
