Well, I am experiencing the same problem with the 16-17 year olds turning populist before I can get them a title. I even tried bribing....alot!. I am to the point now where there are only 9 populist in my senate but they are going to take over soon. the reason is that there are no new characters for the other parties to replace the original ones that are dying. EVERYONE becomes populist by the time they turn 18 b/c they cannot be granted a title !!!

Paradox PLEASE FIX THIS!!! it is killing me.

I know this is in another thread but I wanted to bump it. makes it almost impossible to play a republic for any length of time.

Not everyone, but it certainly happens more than it should. I cannot keep the other parties reproducing enough!

Any way to mod this? Or is this hard-coded in the engine such that only an official patch will do?

I miss the days of Crusader Kings: Deus Vult where rulers could have all kinds of bastard children with "camp followers" or "pretty wenches" and bump off and replace non-producing spouses to generate a bevy of heirs. Not with EU: Rome. Keeping parties alive and with an adequate pool of men for more than two generations is a problem. There is a profound deficiency of women in this game. My current game with Rome has only three (3) women in the nation. Most never marry and don't have children. There are some real balance issues here. Even pillaging other nations for brides does not seem to work well.

A simple fix for this would be to open common\defines.txt and change the maturity date (_CHDEF_AGE_OF_ADULTHOOD_) to 18 rather than 16.

Though the actual bug appears to be that in objectives.txt, all ambitions except for the minor titles have a "can_hold_title =" line to prevent characters from holding an ambition that's not possible for their age. It's a fairly simple matter to add such a line to any title objective that doesn't have it and maybe add an age limitation ("age = 18") to the other objectives like obj_amass_wealth.

Although, changing all of that basically means that you can't do anything with your character until they're 18 anyway, so you might as well just change the adulthood age to 18.

Alright...made the text change from 16 to 18 so we will see how it goes. I hope its not too late! Oh well, worst case I will just throw some people in jail, kill some others and declare a dictatorship!

I love this game in spite of the damned populists:)

Atleast this is how I do to skip the populists:

Leave some traderoutes open, this will increase the likelyness for the mercantile party. It seems to be like 5% conviction per empty traderoute or something... It's better than sitting with populists, but currently the only people in my whole country who don't belong to Mercantile are the faction leaders  .

Edit: Nice fix Cheexsta, will try it out immediately!

How does this affect the monarchies, though? They'll have two more years w/o a mature ruler?

yes, thats exactly what happens in monarchies with this changes. and of course, a smaller number of ambitions are present in monarchies, too...

btw: its now included in the Unofficial Hotfixes Minimod for VV2.1 thx to cheexsta for this fix. :)

Thanks, I'll try this out immediately! This should be in the patch for sure! Popularists are ruining the game...

but be careful - the fix only solved the problem with to young chars getting an ambition. to deal with populists is still a hard work with this fix, too.

I'm going to move this into the bug forums (I must have missed the other thread the poster was referring to).

Seems to be working although I found a new problem which may either be a result of the code change or operator error. All of my newly born and immature characters (blacked-out) are religious party members...even if their parents are both Military. Every single one (about 20 right now) no exception. I though taht maybe when they hit 18, the party would change but it hasn't. I had to declare a dictatorship to keep them from taking over.

Not sure if this is a bug or something I am doing wrong

This fix totally solved the problem with Popularists in my game. Before they completely dominated the Senate and no matter how many gamey techniques I used (lock up or banish all Popularist leaders, etc) I just couldn't regain any balance in my Senate. With this fix, the Popularist are still a nuissance, but, they are manageable. The other factions have made a comeback and now the Mercantile and Civic factions are battling for power, with the Popularists in third place and the Military faction farting around doing nothing.

No one else experiencing this??

Hmm. I actually did a quick search through one of my savegames and found that underaged characters inherently have a tiny amount of religious conviction (0.004). This is probably why they appear to be of the religious party when they come of age, but looks like a workaround for issues surrounding characters with no faction conviction at all since it's so consistent.

I imagine that as soon as you give them a title they want, they'll gain more than enough conviction in that field to turn them away from the religious faction.

Thanks Cheexsta for posting this fix for young Populists, they were really starting to take over my Roman Senate! And thanks Mate0815 for posting the link to your Hotfix mini-mod. I've downloaded it and will be giving it a try tonight.

Finally, I can take back the Senate from the power of the Populists! I sure love this game.
