I am beginning to suspect a memory leak of some sort when it comes to loading saved games. I accidentally clicked the wrong save at one point and when I then clicked another save it took several minutes before it was loaded. I then tried clicking back and forth between the two with an exponential increase in load time as a result until I reached eight minutes where I stopped waiting an killed RomeGame.exe in the task manager.

This isn't new to the beta patches but it's very annoying all the same. Clicking the wrong save initially once costed me 15 minutes of waiting (I noticed it took long and got up to do a few other things I had been neglecting and when I returned 15 minutes later it still wasn't done)...

The extreme slow down for reloading the game definetly has to do with the beta...

To see this in action, run vv 2.31c beta. Pick a game to load, but do not 'play' it. Once the file is loaded, choose a different file. Then do it again. And again... Before too long you will notice the slow down start to take effect. Shortly thereafter you begin waiting exponentially longer...
