Bought VV from GG.

Downloaded and installed in Rome folder

Downloaded and installed patch vv2.1

The game loads everything to the message "Map Initialised Properly, then I get an error

*******************************
Runtime Error!

Program: D:\games\Europa Universalis - Rome\romegame.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information
*******************************

When I click ok, the dialog disappears, as does the game from the system tray. If I leave the box where it is, I can start a game, but as soon as it gets to the map, it freezes and I need to hard reboot.

I've installed the c++ runtime from the other link. Still a crash everytime.

I don't suppose I'll get an answer much before January 2009...support forums look as busy as always with issues but few "official" responses.

Thx

There's rarely a need for devs to help in this forum, 99% of problems we see here are not game bugs.

I suggest you try a complete reinstall: First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall both games, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - if you use Vista, it's best to choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. Then use the Gamers Gate installer to install VV over Rome (that is, into the same directory to overwrite it), then install the 2.1 patch, again making sure you point it to the Rome installation directory used above, so that it overwrites the VV files.

If that doesn't help, please post your new post-reinstall Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files.

I don't doubt it's not a "game bug"...however, I've bought something that doesn't work on my system. Devs (of which I am one by the way) know what they're using in terms of dcoms, coms, 3rd party interfaces etc....that's why the devs should be active. Their software is not working on a system...my system...and as such is faulty. My system easily meets and exceeds their system specifications. If there is something else mentioned in the system specs and I have not got it installed (as an example DirectX9), then that would be my fault. However, as my system clearly meets their system specifications and there is no mentioned of needing anything which I do not have installed, it's down to them to find out the problem and fix it.

I don't mind telling you I'm bored trying to get this game to load.

I am suffering the same problem as mentioned in the first post on this thread. I cannot get into the game at all...I keep getting a Windows error dialog box stating what is already posted in the above thread.

I've performed a complete uninstall / reinstall dance, I've tried rnning with my AV off (just in case), I've added the romegame.exe to the DEP list, I have seemingly downloaded the C++ redistributable and I have the latest DirectX and v180.48 nVidia drivers for my 8800GT card. I posted my DXDiag above (although why you are asked to post it, I do not know...it appears to have been ignored, being as there was no official "Yes, DXDiag is fine" or "DXDiag shows a problem").

What people have to do to get a game to work nowadays is getting beyond ridiculous.

This is my system.log as requested

I've paid my money...any chance I could start a game.

I wouldn't be so bitchy about it except I think your support is really piss poor and your initial release of Rome was so poor I never played it. Now I've bought the patch...err, sorry, expansion, I would like to see if you've made the game better

So...over to you boys.

Can you please try editing settings.txt as follows, changes in bold:

I am sorry you are having so many problems, but your issues with this game and EU3 together seem to be unique. And as the almost sole provider of technical support for both games, I resent your characterisation of my efforts as "piss poor". I have my opinions about your attitude, but I manage to restrain myself from airing them publicly. Perhaps you could return the favour, and not insult people you are asking for help from.

Well, I apologise. I wasn't meaning "you". I meant Paradox. If you still take offense to that then I again apologise, but Paradox support for their games is piss poor. There are many posts in this forum about the game crashing and not loading and there is one person answering these calls...you. That makes Paradox support piss poor. This is a new release of a game and evertime they release a new game the only increased activity you see on their support forums is the people complaining about the game not working. To my recollection, there has never been any increase in support staff even for a new release. That's shoddy.

I also said in my EU III post that I understand that it's between Paradox games and my system. That's fine. That doesn't negate the fact that their software, which I purchased and for which I meet the recomended specifications, does not work on my system. Where do we draw the line at support? Is it when 10 people complain about the same issue that it becomes a problem worth solving, or is it 20? Does one person having a problem negate that problem? "Oh well, it's only a conflict for you, which means it's your system...good day"?

Take these as insults to yourself if you wish. They are not directed at you but at Paradox and, quite frankly, their slap dash, haphazard support fo their software and their treatment of "the individual".

I'm pissed off right now because I bought Rome when it was released and quickly realised, as many did, that it was half baked. So it was shelved. Now, after buying the patch, I find I cannot run either. There, right there, is the reason I'm pissed. Add on top of that numerous installs/uninstalls/reinstalls of not just these two games and 3 addon AND patches, but of other software to try and resolve the issue.

Good day to you.

Andrew

As per my EU III post...I apologise. I'm a little fed up with the problems I'm having. I see you are very active on these forums and I appreciate your help.

I will try again tomorrow with Rome and give you an update.

Where do we draw the line at support? Is it when 10 people complain about the same issue that it becomes a problem worth solving, or is it 20? Does one person having a problem negate that problem? "Oh well, it's only a conflict for you, which means it's your system...good day"?
No-one's drawing any line. No-one has said or implied that just because only you are having the problem that it should not be dealt with. The statement that only you are in this situation is merely a diagnostic indicator that some unusual or unique factor is in play.

I understand you are annoyed with the problems you have been having, and fair enough. But your continued imputations of bad faith by Paradox, such as that above, really tick me off, to be honest. What you hope to gain by this I can't imagine, but it sure doesn't motivate me to go even further out of my way to help you.

I dedicate hours of my life every week to Paradox support for no material reward, and yes I have a loyalty to them so when you insult them (IMO for no good reason) then I take that on board too. I also believe that for a company their size, their support is in general pretty damn good. And I do IT support for a living and have for 35 years, so I know what I'm talking about.

When Rome and VV were released Paradox developers did indeed monitor and post in the support forums here. But they don't do that all the time and a while after release rely on volunteers such as myself to report issues back to them to work on for the next patch (that is, the exact process I am trying to follow here). You may disagree with that as a support model, which is your right. But I don't think that gives you the right to imply you're being fobbed off or treated unfairly or badly when you are not.

I really am trying my best to help you; if that's not good enough for you then I'm sorry but that's all I can do.

I've tried the settings you suggested in a new install of EU Rome (fresh from the box, no patch, no VV) and I am shown the error

If I click Ok, the game unloads. If I ignore the dialog, I am able to get to the menu, but when I start a game and choose a faction, it loads the map and stops responding. In non-windowed mode, I then have to perform a hard reboot. In Window Mode, because I can get to the task manager, I am able to end the romegame.exe task.

And finally, installed the patch and still no change.

The Runtime Error appears immediately after the message "Map Initialised Properly". So the menu is sitting behind it when the Runtime Error shows.

Can I ask, if I have turned trees off, why does it still say "Creating Trees" when the game is loading (up to menu)?

It might also be worth mentioning (although I don't want it to detract from the issue) that I am receiving the same message for both this and EU III, however I am able to ignore the message when I get it in EU III and play the game, whilst with Rome, I cannot...the game hangs.

OK, well I'm out of ideas. At least we've covered off the fundamentals. I've PMed the user here who identified the JIT/VS issue, but no response yet - I guess he's out of town or whatever. Meanwhile I'll post details of this situation backstage; however I believe Paradox are still in their shutdown period so I wouldn't expect any update from them until, say, next week. I'll post back here as soon as I have anything for you.

k...thx for trying anyway.

Also worth mentioning perhaps....in EU III, I get the error as I get into the actual game map, after I've selected a faction. IN Rome I get the error just as I get to the menu...don't know if that's significant.

I'd like to update you on this.

After suffering "other problems" with my system, I decided to move to Windows Vista.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64.

I was able to install Rome and the 1.3 patch and get it to play. When I installed VV and the 2.1 patch, I received an error...something along the "side-by-side" lines...looking through your forum, I found a link which said to reinstall the C++ 2005 runtimes. I did that and the game now runs.

I think my XP installation was somehow porked. I have a dual boot system now so will be slowly migrating over to Vista. I'm pretty sure if I performed a repair or rebuilt my XP installation, I'd be able to get the game running...but as I will be migrating to Vista, it's unlikely I will be doing that.

Thx for your help and again, apologies for my tone.

Another update

I've reinstalled Windows XP, and, in vanilla form, it seems to work.

I did think my system got porked somehow...C++ runtimes I suspect, or .NET Framework...so many different versions.

Anyway. it's working
