Hi! This game has really developed since its release. It is a lot that works great and I am just so impressed by the dept and complexity. The devs must be a bunch of mathematical geniuses. Goes without saying really considering the EU and CK series, and the other HOI games. Games I have spent more time on than I like to think about;-).
I have given WTT a thorough test on level Regular and wish to share my experience with you fellow gamers and developers. I must add that I havent played the game apart from a couple of hundred hours when it was released. If I am posting this the wrong place please advise and I will move it.
I started Japan from the very beginning and now it is very soon 1943. I know WW2 history well and try to play historically.
Japan and the area of operations (AOO) for them is special. Only comparable to playing the US I assume. The area is huge, from northern Manchukuo to the Gilbert and maybe the Solomon islands. All weapons branches and actions are involved. With the exception of parachuting, which I have not needed so far. A huge AOO demands plenty of troops, equipment, movement and the need for control. This causes a good deal of administration. I have learnt that remembering some hotkeys is essential for a smooth game experience. F1, F2, F3 and O, Y, L is the most importent. The different screen views can be a bit confusing but it is logical when one get used to it.
Keeping control of the warfare is somewhat demanding in such a big AOO. The fact that the slowest game pace is relatively fast, combined with the fact that when a unit reach target, either when just moving or doing amphibious invasion, the game does not notify you. It would have been tremendously helpful with an allert button that brings you to the right spot, and halt the game automatically. Customizable. The same is needed when units get surrounded, the enemy cut you of from your main supply source (port), or break through your front line. When doing amphibious invasions several places in the Philippines, and try to keep track of when my maimed main navy reach port at Truk, while fighting a bevildered British unit on Borneo, is exhausting. It is easy to feel overwhelmed. I am though getting used to watch the symbols in the war theatre "boxes" on the right side of the screen. I just miss some notifications as mentioned above.
China and Japan seems well balanced. I have for a while ago stabilized the front and kept it like that without much adjustments. I was not able to do any Pearl Harbour attack because of the need for fleets in areas for army transports to pass through. It is hard to know how big fleets is needed for serving that purpose? I actually tried to reach PH for test purposes but my fleet did not have the range…
The US did not embargo me as far as I’ve noticed as they did historically, and so Oil has been sufficient and there has been no reason for me to attack the US. Not quite sure about Steel but I have improved infrastructure in provinces and got more out of my own sources which has been, if not enough, sufficient to produce all models of equipment. US got involved in the war after they declared war on Germany and Canade involved them in the Canadian-Japanese war…
A couple of things that might need looking in to:
- My old carrier planes are shot down in huge numbers by US carrier planes. See attachment. Should I not be able to put all my Nakajima type planes on carriers? It says so in the research screen but not in the model card. Whatever I do I am only able to move my oldest model onto my carriers... See screenshots.
- By 1943 AI Germany has not been able to push Soviet away from the Polish border, so seems game balancing is an issue. See screenshot of map. Germany attacked USSR as earlysas 1940 so perhaps that is the main problem? Germany just conquered Switzerland though.

This is in any case great fun, just need to do something with be able to use my newer plane models on carriers.
