Scenario One - The Bear Emerges (March 30th thru April 6th)

Supply Points: 10

Week 3

For a second week the fighting continued in the Fulda Gap. The momentum of the invasion was beginning to overwhelm the remaining NATO forces in the Fulda Gap. The 8th SGA succeeded in crushing the resistance at Wiesbaden but remnants of the 5th Infantry Division battled on through the week at Frankfurt but they certainly fall by the end of next week. The 8th Infantry Division managed to take Woorstadt but Bingen and Ingelheim lay in ruins after two weeks of artillery bombardment and firefighting. It is clear to intelligence that there is a heavy Spetsnaz presence on the west bank of the Rhine seeking to open the door for their comrades coming toward the east bank. Recon has discovered five Spetsnaz forward operating bases in the forests on both sides of the Rhine. They are coordinating other airborne units against our positions across the front. They must be eliminated if we are to succeed in the upcoming week. Meanwhile Mainz fell under threat but the 21st Infantry Division managed to spare the support of their armored brigade which have engaged the 8th SGA on the road to Mainz. We must solidify our positions on the west bank, reinforce Mainz, and if possible root out the Spetsnaz units through the use of some air support we've been provided.

Meanwhile allied forces at Kassel were defeated and the 10th Soviet Guards Army have swept down the highway taking every city on the road to Bads Mansfeld at which allied forces are currently engaged. They are not expected to hold out beyond the week. Fortunately command has freed up two divisions who have established Forward Operating Base Eagle Claw in preparation for a counter attack by the 9th Army (American) and 2nd Army Corps (France). The road after the Gap is to Ramstein Air Base and into France neither mustn't fall. The air force has allocated heavier firepower options for the 8th InfDiv to assist in the defense of Bad Kreuznach our only remaining base of operations along the 58. Your primary objectives is to hold Bad Kreuznach, Mainz, and take Bingen and Ingelheim. Send your recon out so that we can coordinate bombing runs and in doing so the enemy will retreat into guerrilla tactics until help arrives. But they won't be trying to take cities and bases.

Objectives:
  • Hold Bad Kreuznach and protect the supply route at all costs. The 9th Army followed by the 2nd Army Corps are preparing for a major offensive due to begin at the end of the week. Designated Operation Eagle Approach, it seeks to cut off reinforcements and support the defense of the Rhine granting time to 2nd Army Corps to reinforce the Rhine from the west. 2nd Army Corps have already executed a successful surprise attack on the 8th SGA, I bet they never thought our units could be committed as fast as what has been happening. With a force of 54 M1 Abrams with several brigades of infantry ready to link up with 10th Infantry Division and retake Wiesbaden the next few days will determine the course of the war in Europe.
  • With your recon units send them into the nearby forests to deliver exact coordinates for our air force to bomb them into dust. They have a 50% success rate in being able to direct an attacked CAS strike and eradicating the Spetsnaz FOBs. It might be wise to use your recon in directing artillery against enemy elements far away from our personnel in the field. There are two large forces approaching Woorstadt and Abmannshsn which must have recon units calling in artillery for shelling to have any effect. If the Spetsnaz FOBs are destroyed their command structure will take a hard blow. It will force them to limit their activities to guerrilla actions far from urban centers.
  • This is our last chance to take the advantage before we will be defending Mainz and Bad Kreuznach directly.
Support Available

2 x Close-Air Support (CAS)(Heavy Bombing Runs)(up to -25 enemy strength)
5 x CAS (Precision Strike)(up to -5 enemy strength)
10 x Recon (needed to coordinate CAS and artillery strikes beyond 10 hexes)

The Procession of War (1987)

The European Theatre

By the third week of the war the armies in Europe had fallen into a series of offensives and counter offensives. The 15th, 18th, and 25th Soviet Guards Armies streaked across the north german plain in the first week but NATO contingency plans were responding with much success in slowing the momentum of the Soviet army. But this is only the third week and already WarPact has reached Hamberg and Lubeck fighting two disastrous battles with casualties upward of 30,000 in Lubeck and 55,000 in Hamberg for NATO personnel. But the shock had been overcome by the third week and in that time French, British, Danish, and American armies were on their way at breakneck speeds to reach the front. By April 3rd, the 9th Army (American) ahead of the 2nd Army Corps (French) had arrived at the Fulda Gap and initiated a surprise attack on 8th SGA troops approaching the city of Mainz. But it was only a stopgap strategy as it would take another week to muster their full strength against the enemy. The West German army was holding firm through their country supporting the allied cause by blowing up their own cities. Soon if we fail at the Gap it will be infrastructure being blown up to stifle the Soviet advance. The Soviet advance along the Danube has bogged down as our aircraft have successfully prevent the use of motorized land/sea vehicles that was the key to their possible advance in that theatre. NATO has therefore seen it fit to move 8th US Army to take Hamberg and launch an offensive from the south against the enemy.

Life At Home And Losses Mount

At home the American people were in shock. Within a span of three weeks they went from prosperous middle class life at the tail end of a conflict that looked to be ending to a nation at war. Department of Defense programs are coordinating with civilian and government organizations to begin the process of building a war-time economy. It is thought that the decline of domestic industry in previous years will hurt the war effort for at least a year until federal initiatives finish their first wave of wartime factory construction. Currently the first group of draftees are being organized and integrated into the military. 350,000 men between the age of 21 to 35 will be joining the front in 4 to 6 months with another 300,000 arriving 2 months after that. In cities, rural communities, and in vast empty regions hundreds of thousands of active duty, guard, and reserve troops are preparing for an invasion in the next month. Bombing drills are an everyday occurrence in every school, hospital, and job site. While Americans await the first the peoples of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Denmark have suffered civilian losses in the hundreds of thousands as the war for the skies rages. NATO has lost 256 fighters, 31 bombers, and almost a dozen bases and installations in these weeks. Losses for ground forces are estimated to have surpassed 150,000 already including wounded altogether. WarPact losses are harder to ascertain. We have 340 confirmed fighters to have been destroyed with 48 bombers downed. Our bombing runs have avoided most civilian dense locations but it looks as though that policy will be changing in the next month.

The Soviet Union has made no attempt at communication and WarPact ambassadors have been kept under house arrest. The political situation in Moscow had grown confused in the years before this began. Vladimir Nebetov a former KGB operative and leader of the hardline faction at the Kremlin is thought to be pulling the strings in Moscow since 1984. His "Quiet Coup" two years ago signaled a radicalization of the Soviet Union away from ending the communist system in Russia. One of his principal allies is Marshal Dmitry Fyodorovich Yazov who is the supreme commander of WarPact forces in Europe.

Here's a dossier for you:

The Air War (Spring, 1987)
2232312.jpg

Without the threat of nuclear war the conflict that was emerging saw the pinnacle of aerospace technology on display as thousands of fighters and bombers flew over the landscape dropping devastation onto the world or trying to shoot down the aircraft dropping the devastation. The Soviets commenced bombing by the evening of March 12th beginning a response by NATO committing the largest numbers of aircraft in the history of warfare into the skies against WarPact. Over the battlefields of Germany the sky is always full of crossing squadrons of fighters or bombers on their way to their targets which might be your own positions. Thousands of F-15s attack squadrons of Tupolev Tu -160s and thousands of Mikoyan MiG-31s attack squadrons of B-52s which have so far only targeted industrial targets with minimal civilian casualties. This policy has been changed and the direct bombing of civilian targets have commenced for two days now.
Warfare at super sonic speeds is something still something new. American and Soviet pilots of this era are not used to dogfighting and both sides are adjusting to the new paradigm. Bombing raids have struck Paris, London, Strasbourg, Manchester and dozens of industrial areas for our side. Our bombers have began pummeling Warsaw, Budapest, Dresden, and Leipzig in retaliation. Estimated civilian casualties for both sides are nearly three hundred thousand.

It is the contingency plan of NATO Command to lay waste to West Germany's infrastructure if a general retreat is ordered. Highways, cities, farmland, forests, plains will become a bombing zone with shifts of bombing runs to hold off the Soviet advance. Unfortunately our air forces in Europe have sustained moderate losses only after three weeks and NATO is apprehensive about transferring resources and troops from North America to the European front in anticipation of a WarPact invasion. The Soviets and their allies however have mustered an estimated 65% of its total air power over West Germany while NATO has only committed 45% but intelligence indicates a slight technological advantage against Soviet assets engaged so far. In preparation for the counter offensive in the Fulda Gap there has been a considerable reallocation of air force assets to the armies fighting there. The Gap must be held and command is showing its determination in making sure it doesn't fall.

TO: Division Commander
SEND: Colonel Harvey Curtiss Barnum, Jr. 2nd Brigade

I can spare 3rd Battalion to reinforce Mainz or to take Ingelheim with 3rd Brigade 6th Battalion. What do you request?.

(Good to see, that Göttingen is still free. We are simply a too tough bunch for dem Commies :D)

From: 3rd Brigade
To: Division HQ

Southern flank seems to be secure for now. 5th Battalion will hold Woorstadt with the Support of 2nd Tank Regiment, while 6th Battalion continues to push Forward in Ingelheim. 5th Mechanized Regiment should be deployed in Ingelheim completely and two Artillery Regiments supporting the combat. If possible, a CAS (precision strike) at Ingelheim would completely turn the tide. There are more units in the south, but they will have to attack our prepared positions in Woorstadt and Bad Kreuznach (2nd Brigade) in order to achieve their goals, so 3rd Brigade abstains from further advances.

Orders 3rd Brigade:

5th Battalion - Hold Position in Woorstadt (request support from 2nd Mechanized Regiment)
6th Battalion - Engage enemy in Ingelheim (request support from whole 5th Mechanized Regiment; two Artillery Regiments and a CAS [precision strike])

Apart from that I suggest to focus on Mainz and Bingen. The enemy forces in the northwest will not be able to reach Bad Kreuznach this week, so we can eliminate the threats in the east first and then turn our attention to the northwest. It might be harsh to burn down Bingen and Mainz with heavy CAS, but keeping the supply flowing is more important.

(Question to GM: 6th Battalion had 38 casualties so far. Did they receive any replacements? An overview over the actual strength of every unit would be nice :))

It seems that 3rd Bridage can manage their own. I will reinforce Mainz.

3rd Battalion stays in Bad Kreuznach and defend it .
4th Battalion to lay anti-personnel mines south of Bad Kreuznach. Inform all about the mines there.

Since we have another day until the update, what about my request? It would be nice to have an overview about the units` strength. And, to be perfectly frank, a tad bit intelligence concerning what the enemy has would not hurt either. It would help to make intelligent decisions. :)

Week 3 Update

1st Brigade

With NATO reinforcements arriving at the rear of the enemy’s airborne elements north of Bad Kreuznach a desperate assault began against Abmmanshsn and Bingen.

1st Battalion + 4th Armored + 1st/3rd Artillery continued the fight at Bingen which saw a bloody battle for control of the town. Spetsnaz units were again successful in laying ambushes and executing a counter offensive toward the center square. Despite their initial successes enemy elements there sustained too heavy casualties to continue a push for the rest of the town and retreated toward the Rhine. They are disconnected from any central command and their position is unknown. Bingen has been taken.

2nd Battalion prepared for an assault on Abmannshsn. The assault came on the second day of the week. WarPact forces were desperate to link up with their compatriots south of Bad Kreuznach and their attack struck our force hard. Despite the efforts of the artillery and 3rd Armored the town fell after only five hours.

2nd Brigade

3rd Battalion held at Bad Kreuznach.

4th Battalion held at Bad Kreuznach.

Engineers could come to Abmannashsn due to their minefield project at Bad Kreuznach.

Our forces at Bad Kreuznach has engaged in battle against 8th SGA elements.

3rd Brigade

5th Battalion + 2nd Armored dug in at Woorstadt in anticipation of an enemy attack. But no attack came as the enemy focused its efforts on Ingelheim.

6th Battalion + 5th Armored (elements) were still engaged with WarPact forces at Ingeheim where they launch a counter attack accompanied by heavy shelling and precision air strikes. 5th Armored attempted to go around the town and flank the enemy supply lines and reinforcements. Ingelheim was the focus of the enemy’s forces south of Bad Kreuznach. For the first time it became obvious that the enemy could now coordinate airstrikes onto our positions. Ingelheim remains undecided.

Mechanized Regiments

1st Armored Regiment (Bingen)
2nd Armored Regiment (Abmannashsn)
3rd Armored Regiment (Bingen)
4th Armored Regiment (Bingen)
5th Armored Regiment (Ingelheim + Woorstadt)

Scenario One - The Bear Emerges

Week 4

Supply Points: 10

The moment we've been fighting against has come upon us commanders. The 8th SGA have solidified their foothold in the Fulda Gap and their attack on the Rhine has commenced from the Hechtannus and Spessart Forests and on the eastern grasslands. Fortunately the 9th US Army and 2nd Army Corps (France) arrived just in time to stifle WarPact's momentum. The west bank has merged with the greater battles going on across the Rhine as 8th SGA airborne and Spetsnaz are coordinating artillery shelling and airstrikes against Ingelheim, Mainz, and Bad Kreuznach. 10th Infantry Division is holding firm at Mainz but 8th Infantry Division have sustained heavy casualties so far and with the arrive of NATO armor command has ordered a general withdrawal to Bad Kreuznach and Mainz to fortify our positions there. This is the moment of truth for our efforts in the Fulda Gap. If we fail here we will be forced to fall back FOB Ramstein in anticipation of an attack against the airbase.

In the Hechtannus Forest the 9th Army and 2nd Army Corps are engaged in a battle with the 10th SGA for control of seven cities and towns. The enemy have only committed conventional forces there with support of heavy bombing and close air strikes. FOB Eagle Claw is under threat as forward troops have engaged Soviet forces several miles north of the base. Meanwhile our forces are directly engaged in the battle of the Spessart Forest where highly organizes airborne and spetsnaz units have entered Mainz and Bad Kreuznach in a major offensive. They are being supported with heavy bombing and close air strikes which are pummeling the west bank. Anti air units have managed to keep up steady resistance from their end and the air forces have done what they can but another week of it can put our chances of victory in danger. In concert with the Spessart Offensive is the attack made by the 8th SGA against 9th Army elements assaulting Wiesbaden.

8th Infantry Division shall withdrawal to Bad Kreuznach to hold against the enemy. We are now on the defensive commanders. NATO armor has arrived to support both Bad Kreuznach and Mainz but Spetsnaz coordinated air strikes are causing significant damage to their unit strengths. Hold firm commanders, this week will be pivotal to our chances here in the Fulda Gap.

Objectives

  • Defend Bad Kreuznach at all costs
Note: There won't be any movement orders this turn given our orders. I will be rolling a luck die to see if 8th Infantry Division holds or is forced to retreat which would initiate Scenario Two. But we can still win at the Fulda Gap. I'm calculating all the stats to be updated and we still have a chance :]

Sorry, but I have to quit. This game gets more stupid from turn to turn and is simply not worth my time.
