Does warfare affect COTs? Playing as France, I finally captured Spain's Tuxpan's Cot after a three-year world-wide war. Only problem is, while it used to make over 500 ducats a year, its down to 120! I mean, I have a COt in Monterrary, Cal and it came naturally, not thorough blood, and it's worth more! I burned and pillaged much of the Mexican country-side in my campaigns and am wondering if that affects value in anyway. This has never happened to me before. Anybody got an answer?

(On a side note, the COT in Kebec which Spain stole from me in an earlier war is now booming! Damn irony!)

Hm, let's see: I nuke Europe with 100 megatons. Now will that affect container traffic in Rotterdam? :D

The value of CoT's comes from the surrounding provinces. You can see which provinces belong to which CoT in the trade screen. If the provinces are ravaged by war, the trade in the CoT will go down. But after some fat years with peace everything ought to be honkydory again.

Regards,

EoE

It could also be that most of the provinces belonging to the COT before it was taken now belong to the previous owner's 'home' COT or some other colonial COT of his. IIRC colony COT 'allegiance' isn't as strict as in the Old World.

To both respones: it's been 20 years since the war, (things must have built back up) and all the province trade in Mexico still goes to my COT, even though half the provinces are owned by Spain. What the hell is wrong?

The nationality of COT provinces affects which provinces belong to it (this is a function of distance from COT compared to other COTs closer to the controlling nation of a regular province). Therefore, if you capture a Spanish COT in the New World, many of the provinces should shift to a different Spanish COT, decreasing the value of the COT you captured. For another example, if you're playing as Russia, gotten a COT in western Siberia, and then start capturing Persian provinces that were originally in the Isfahan COT, those provinces will become part of the COT that you control. If you then gain the Isfahan COT for yourself, these provinces will return to being part of that COT (and some other of your provinces will join this COT too).

Certainly, CoT income is affected by war as has been mentioned - plundered provinces or provinces no longer controlled by its owner (I think) no longer contribute income to whatever CoT they belong to.

An interesting twist. Whoever controls (not owns) a CoT province during a war gets the tariff income for the CoT. I found this out in a series of wars with Spain (as England), where I would take Flandres during the war (but never settled for it). I always had a big spike in tariff income.

If your CoT isn't bringing in as much income as it used to, it is possible that another CoT has opened nearby and siphoned off your income-generating provinces.

For example, at the start of the game, Flanders is a big deal, and at the end it isn't, because other CoT's open nearby.

I have had excellent luck walking into another nation's zone of influence and grabbing their CoT. In the cases I've seen, they don't end up getting another CoT, and their trading posts feed me money for the rest of the game.

I wouldn't give up a CoT, except maybe an African one, as tribute under any circumstances. Conversely, they are the first provinces to go for in a war.
