I posted a post about this to the Main EU II discussion group describing how you can set yourself up to run either version - at least until Paradox fixes the problem.

Maybe someone can copy it here and sticky it or something..

Here's a repost of the message:

I've not done extensive testing, but 1.03 crashes when players try to connect to your game.

I would recommend keeping two version present if you want to play multiplayer for now..

Here's some instructions on how to do this (not for complete computer novices):

If you've not yet installed 1.03:

Copy your Europa Universalis directory to "Europa Universalis 1.03", rename your old Europa Universalis directory to "Europa Universalis 1.02", edit system registry as described below to point to Europa Universalis 1.03 and apply the 1.03 patch.

If you've installed 1.03 already:

Copy your Europa Universalis directory to "Europa Universalis 1.03", then reinstall the game to the directory "Europa Universalis 1.02" and apply the 1.02 patch.

You will then need to create a shortcut to the EU2.exe executable for both different versions - label these correctly and add to your desk top.

To switch between versions, you need to edit your system registry:
run "regedit.exe".
Open the following directory tree:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Paradox/Europa Universalis 2

double click on the "name" field labeled "Install Path". Change this path to be the path name of the version you want to run. Then run the correct icon (shortcut) for that version.

That's all you need to do!

You don't need to do the registry thing. Just make sure to make a shortcut to both executables, 1.02 and 1.03. Don't use the 'play game' option when you put the CD in.

However, if you do that you will probably be using the data set specified in your registry (I've not verified this, but this is usually how things are done). Meaning, you'll be running 1.02 on 1.03's data files, or vica versa. Although this will probably work, I wouldn't recommend doing this, as who knows what bugs could pop up from running on different data files..

Nope, that's not how this game works. Don't bother with the registry fix folks.

I checked this out tonight and you are absolutely correct. I guess EU2 uses relative pathnames (yuck). Another no-no in Windows programming, but we'll leave that for another time.

So, even easier - ignore the stuff about editing the registry!
