I'm currently testing the way custom building grow ingame depending on the asset you took as a template when you imported.

I'm running tests on level 5 high density residential.

I've exclusively made 4x4 lots but taken all lots as templates since you can change the lot size later.

More than half of the resulting lots NEVER grow.

Worse, you might think it's because sometimes I took a 2x2 lot as a template, but no. NONE of the 4x4 templates resulted in growing lots.

Maybe it's random... I won't re-test everything.

I can just advise all builders to ALWAYS test their growable buildings in the game and see if it grows or not. (Especially for high level growables, do not just take a picture in the asset editor and upload your work, take the time to test it.).

Still testing.

It's even worse, it might be totally inconsistent.

I stopped the test to post here, then I added some new buildings I made because I wanted to see if they would grow too (but I let the ones I used for the test installed in the game).

Now some of the ones that never grew on the first part of the test are growing.. and some others that grew well during the first part don't grow at all.

I've even got one that grew in one color growing but with another color.

I'm even certain that some of the ingame buildings that weren't showing before are now growing. I didn't pay them attention during the first test.

Hmmm... and the 4x4 templates still do not grow at all.

CO devs have answered to my topic in the bugs section. There is a limit to the number of different buildings the game can make grow for each different category. This will be fixed. For now some custom buildings might not show and some original buildings might not show as well if you've got custom content installed. Just be patient.

Currently 8 per Zone Type, Density, Level, Length, Width category. I.e. 8 lots of 3x4 low density residential level 2.

I am wondering if my latest mod will run into that problem or fix it though. Please test and see if it allows more variations to grow or not.

Sweet thanks! Is it compat with Proper Hardness?

You + Proper Hardness dev should team up - I imagine your work plus his/hers would be astronomically awesome.

If it's the same everywhere (I mean in each density and level) then it's 8 TOTAL, and will be 4 CO buildings and 4 custom ones.

This really needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

Ya, it's very little. I think my mod will currently help with high density residential, commercial, and office variations because I have my own indexes to the prefabs (that go up to 50 for each combination). I could add in the low density and industry prefabs as well and see if it helps?

I'm not sure if this is true, but I think the building variations also take up a slot because when I updated my new building mod to cover all buildings I swear I am seeing more color variations than before.

I ran into a texture bug though, I think it might be because of the poor quality of some of the workshop assets I was importing though, those things throw debug errors like crazy. Or it might be some other problem. Not sure, but after I turned off assets I had downloaded and restarted it went away.

So, I made some 2x2 asset variations of existing low density level 1 residential and saw all 4 variations of each one, including the base game versions.

Edit: actually, I don't think building variation is related to this. It doesn't look like it would be... so it probably isn't.

I also ran tests about color variations and on most assets they don't show ingame.

Edit : I was talking about assets with custom buildings, the CO buildings seem to have color variations, but maybe not all of them ??

Edit again, I just read you made some tests.

Yeah but it seems to depend on the template you used when creating the new asset.

On level 1 I had no problems growing all colors but on level 4 I had two colors max, and only one on level 5?

Ya, I'm not sure what is going on, I set my mod to build the new low density residential buildings at level 5 and made a custom 4x4 lot based off an existing 4x4 building and it never even built it. It also didn't use any color variations of the regular building.
