Sci-fi incarnation of turn-based classic has players reach for new frontiers!

Today we announced Age of Wonders: Planetfall, a new upcoming strategy game from Triumph Studios, creators of the critically acclaimed Age of Wonders and Overlord series. Slated for release for PC and console in 2019, Planetfall will bring all the exciting turn-based empire building and immersive tactical combat of its predecessors to an all-new sci-fi setting.

In Age of Wonders: Planetfall, players will emerge from the dark age of a fallen galactic empire to craft a new future for their people. Exploring the planetary ruins and encountering other surviving factions that have each evolved in their own way, players will unravel the history of a shattered civilization. Fight, build, negotiate and technologically advance the way to utopia, in a deep single player campaign, on random maps and against friends in multiplayer.

“We’re thrilled to finally announce our latest endeavor alongside Paradox,” said Lennart Sas, Triumph Studios CEO. “Age of Wonders: Planetfall is roughly three years into development, running on a new generation of our multi-platform Creator Engine. While the setting is new, we’re confident that Age of Wonders fans will feel right at home exploring the remnants of the Star Union. Our aim is to make a game that greatly expands upon its predecessors, and still employs the core principles that made Age of Wonders such a success.”

Key Features:
  • Strategic Turn-Based Sci-Fi Combat - Perfect your combat strategy in intense turn-based battles that offer tactical challenges, a large cast of races, units with customizable weapons, and destructible environments.

  • Discover a Rich Science Fiction World - Uncover the history of the fallen galactic empire as you explore lush landscapes, and experience the emergent story. Encounter NPC factions and rival houses, and discover hidden technologies that can strengthen your society and give you advantage over enemies.

  • Planetary Empire Building - Create your own unique House, and build prosperous colonies through economic specializations of planetary sectors and governing doctrines.

  • Multiple Paths to Victory - Achieve your end goals through conquest, diplomacy or doomsday technologies. Engrossing options with NPC factions and rival Houses won’t make the decisions easy!

Now I need to go and play an Age of Wonders game to see if this is something I'll be interested in lol.

Feels a bit Beyond earth hope it works out better than that. That said I wouldn't have put age of wonders in the title since it has nothing to do with the story of the age of wonder universe. It's essentially the same stupid marketing decision that had you out EU in Eu Rome. Yeah it may bring in some attention, but it also will inhibit it from developing as a franchise of it's own and it's kind of cheap.

Sort of a mix between Heroes III and Civ5 in my experience.
Id say age of wonders 2 is the best game but the graphics are very dated so you may want to go with AoW3.

Nobody cares. Where is the PDX announcement?
Maybee you don't, I however do. I have played AoW long before I found paradox. Also as I recall it's after lunch.

I'm going to guess that the idea was that this is the same kind of gameplay as the AoW series, but in a sci-fi setting. But essentially I do agree that it should just have been a standalone title/franchise. The Age of Wonders (even if eventually it got some sci-fi influences) was a fantasy series and this seems like nothing like that.

Also all the AoW games had the same setting, granted one that at least at first was chock full on names based on Shakespeare and kind of camp, but that was awesome in it's own way.

Didn't prevent the endless serie from being successful. It's just marketing anyway. Just wait and see, the Triumph guys are awesome :)

This is novictoriya3?

Nop, that one is still TBA even if the title already leaked :D

:( Not my thing, I still wanta reoslution to the canonical cliffhanger ending of the AOW3 expansion :(

AOW4 would have me excited, this? I need to know more about.

Back in he days. roaming the city i cam across a new game store. Stepped in and noticed they have a computer. With some dragon logo game i had never heard of. 15min later i was in love for life. AoW1 was quite something with its little oddities. Aow2 became more mechanical... and shadowmagic really fleshed it out. Especially with the supermod that was created very late (lots of new units, backgrounds etc... some downright artistic maps out there made with that material that whole teams spent lots of manhouryears on!). Aow3 became more ..hmm.. generalized. A lot less tricks that were left for players to create (like no flying ships or squids ;( created via making the unit + flying spell). All of which was removed for very standardized tricks.

Looks like postapocalyptic space recolonization game. Much dope. Hope for a good story about society desintegration, but I'm sure it'll be a good 4X anyway.

With cyber hobos fighting over a couple cans as in Wastelands perhaps? :D

The endless series had a common naming theme did did not slap the same name on every game.
And the guys at firaxis were awesome too yet beyond earth wasn't even the best cna make bad games and I have yet to see anyone do a planet based sci-fi 4x game well.

No ability to turn the entire map into lava or sink it into the sea. I missed that most of all. The wizards of AoW2 were essentially gods (and they often enough posed as such) the characters of AoW3 were much more limited.

Well, i'd say it kind of unexpected. So - classic combat system from AoW in futuristic setting, together with expanded economical system and some global elements? If they talk about "planetary Sectors", so, instead of some unrelated "maps", we'll have the whole planet on strategic level and separate "maps" on lower levels, we actually fight for?
