Right now, aside from attending events and such, the actual locations of vassals rarely matter. When in an era before modern communications, even with fast mongol-like exchange of information, it takes time for you to interact and talk to people across a large empire.

Those further away will always be harder to directly manage because of the time and communication delays. But what we have is while interacting with foreign realms far away might be restricted in terms of communication, once your mega-empire border someone on the opposite end of Eurasia, this is somehow not an issue?

I mean if I'm a Japanese emperor ruling over most of the world, but my capital remains in Kyoto, I should not be able to directly communicate and talk with my vassal in Ireland with no time-lag just because I have a huge empire that stretches from Japan to Ireland.

Having to decide how much autonomy a province far away from your capital should matter! Maybe you adopt an approach that grant vassals more leeway to act if they are far away. Or maybe you are more restrictive of rights and abilities vassals far away can have over their control. Until you unlock new shipping technology that makes the age of sail and global sailing tech more smoother, I feel there should be more restriction on vassal interaction.

Only if you play till some late-game with maybe tech unlocks, with large fleet of global sailing ships that you may be able to have an easier time in terms of managing a huge empire with distant vassals.
