So as far as I can tell the positions of ships on the grand map DO NOT determine starting positions in a Naval Battle.

I just tried to attack a larger fleet of Flutes with 3 Xebecs. My plan was to get the weather gage and fly up to them, then board with Marines. I saved them game after I clicked to attack the fleet. I then spent 30 minutes loading and attacking from the EXACT same spot and each battle started very differently.

Some times my ships were split, some times they were together. Some times the enemies fleet was facing directly at me, and sometimes they were in a line sailing away (Which is how they looked on the Map when I attacked).

If I was a captain of a ship I would not attack unless I had the weather gage. In the game I am consistently forced into battles where I am downwind and would not have attacked if I knew I was. I understand if you get attacked but I am engaging here, I should have some say on where I am when I attack you!!!

Is there anyway to remedy this or is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Yeah, as far as I know ship positions are completely random.
